Franko Discussion / Case Keenum one of the best outside the pocket
« on: December 29, 2018, 01:25:11 am »
; worst inside the pocket The Denver Broncos have not gotten enough good plays from Case Keenum through the first four games. He ranks at the bottom of the league when throwing from inside the pocket , which is where most of a quarterbacks throws come from. However, when the Broncos are able to get Keenum outside the pocket to throw the ball, he ranks among the best in the NFL through four games. The sad part of these stats is that until Keenum can get the job done better from inside the pocket, the Broncos offense is going to continue to disappoint. Horse TracksFive Key Matchups: Broncos vs. JetsLed by Von Miller, the Broncos' pass rush looks to take advantage of a rookie quarterback while the offense takes on a fast Jets defense. The what-if story of Sam Darnold and the BroncosDarnold was the Broncos' highest-graded QB, but his history with the Broncos ended there.Denver Broncos got a gem when linebacker Josey Jewell dropped in draftEvery week, rookie fourth-round pick Josey Jewell keeps carving out more time on the Broncos' defense in spite of his combine numbers.Colby Wadman went from delivering pizzas to the NFLBroncos punter Colby Wadman was a pizza delivery man not long ago.NFL NewsWhich 3-1 NFL teams are actually good and which ones are just luckyWins are wins Youth Todd Davis Jersey , and the Titans have three of them, but we have a pretty good idea of who’s more likely to keep winning going forward.Andrew Luck has to do it all for the disastrous, injury-riddled ColtsBetween a receiving corps that drops everything and an outrageous list of injuries, Andrew Luck isn’t getting much help. The Dallas Cowboys have the best pass rusher no one talks aboutRetired NFL defensive end Stephen White has a closer look at the beating heart of the Cowboys’ defense.Khalil Mack’s dominance, explained in 5 playsWe used the Expected Points Added stat to try and pinpoint the value that Khalil Mack brings to the Bears.Which NFL defense is the 2018 version of the Seahawks’ Legion of Boom? The Seahawks’ reign is over. So who do quarterbacks fear now?Raiders agree to trade Khalil Mack to the Bears Jon Gruden and the Oakland Raiders burned through the midnight oil to find a way to trade their best player and former Defensive Player of Year, Khalil Mack. The suitor is none other than the Chicago Bears. The same team who traded two first round picks to the Denver Broncos for Jay Cutler in 2009. Although, unlike that deal for Cutler Youth Domata Peko Jersey , this is a trade that will likely pay off in aces for Chicago.Though an agreement is now in place, but sides are working on finalizing the deal to send the former fifth-overall pick to the Bears.Mack, 27, is in the prime of his NFL playing career. He has 40.5 career sacks since coming into the league in 2014 and figures to break the record contract Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams just landed.More details to follow when this deal is finalizes and the Raiders take another big step towards gutting their roster Josh McDaniels style.

The Seattle Seahawks coaching staff vowed to commit to the run game throughout the offseason Womens Russell Wilson Jersey , and through two games... we’ve not really seen that. Seahawks running backs have only rushed 33 times, while Brian Schottenheimer has dialed up 86 pass plays, with 69 attempted throws from Russell Wilson, 12 sacks, and 5 Wilson scrambles. In the flow of both the losses to the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears, the Seahawks were never behind by more than 14, so what gives?Head coach Pete Carroll told media reporters to put the blame on him and his uh... lack of patience.“Yeah, I would tell you that my...I’ll just take it. My impatience a little bit, you know,” Carroll said (via Tacoma News Tribune). “Figuring that we should be on the board more than we had and just got to throw the ball up more than I want to. I’m over that. Both games were so close throughout. We were close enough we could have done whatever we wanted to all the way down to the end of it. I just got a little bit impatient, threw the ball a bit more than we needed to.“And so you look back and that’s with limited opportunities because we weren’t converting, it just kind of works together. I’m just owning up. But that’s what I would say is the issue with that. I need to be a little less impatient. I’m a little bit, tend to be that way, you know?”Now when I say that Seahawks running backs have carried it 33 times, the trio of Chris Carson/Rashaad Penny/Mike Davis have only racked up 116 yards. In other words, the “improved Seahawks rushing attack” is as bad as it was last year. I find “establishing the run” to be a thing that shouldn’t exist, but the Seahawks offense is absolutely not built to thrive off of what is nearly a 4-to-1 pass-run ratio.Schotty’s own presser involved the ever-quotable coach speak. It looks like Carroll is somewhat covering for Brian by saying his impatience led to him intervening in Schottenheimer’s game calling. The third quarter of the Bears game saw the Seahawks pass it six straight times, for a gain of one yard. By the time they ran the ball again, they were behind 17-3 and in uptempo mode... the lack of a faster-paced offense is another storyline in itself.Ideally the Seahawks offense finally finds a decent rhythm against the Dallas Cowboys, and maybe Chris Carson won’t magically disappear from the game due to a non-existent cardio concern.Seahawks-Cardinals 2018 NFL season: Kickoff time Authentic J.R. Sweezy Jersey , TV schedule, radio, live streaming, and more The Seattle Seahawks (1-2) close out September with their third road game in four weeks, as they travel to Glendale to take on the winless Arizona Cardinals (0-3). This is Seattle’s first NFC West matchup of the year, and they’re looking to get to .500 after defeating the Dallas Cowboys in last week’s home opener. As for the Cardinals... well things could be better, and they’re hoping that benching QB Sam Bradford in favor of 2018 first-round draft pick Josh Rosen begins the righting of the ship. One development Seahawks fans are delighted with is the return of WR Doug Baldwin, who effectively missed 2 1鈦? games due to a partial MCL tear in his right knee, having already dealt with soreness in his left knee. Unfortunately, it’ll be a bit longer before LB K.J. Wright is healed and ready to play with his own knee injury. The defense has been solid through the last two weeks, and they were able to sack Dak Prescott five times and generate three takeaways. For the Cardinals, they’ve only scored 20 points through three games, worst in the NFL, and have not beaten the Seahawks at home since 2012, which was Russell Wilson’s pro debut. Of course, as you’ve seen in recent NFL games, you can’t take any game for granted, and Seattle needs to be alert and not risk being 1-3 with a home showdown against the 4-0 Los Angeles Rams looming. Here are all the details you need on Sunday’s Week 4 divisional matchup, including broadcast information, live streaming options Authentic Bobby Wagner Jersey , radio commentary, and more:TV ScheduleDate: Sunday, September 30th, 2018Time: 4:05 PM ET/1:05 PM PT Channel: FOX (check NFL coverage map)Announcers: Dick Stockton and Mark SchlerethLocation: State Farm Stadium | Glendale, ArizonaRadio: 710 ESPN Seattle/97.3 KIRO FM (click here for additional TV and radio affiliates outside of the Seattle area)Radio Announcers: Steve Raible, Dave Wyman (Reporters: Jen Mueller and John Clayton)Online Streaming: NFL Game Pass (Free 7-Day Trial) | Sling TV | PlayStation Vue |YoutubeTVCurrent 53-man roster: Click hereOpponent Blog: Revenge of the BirdsFollow Field Gulls on social media!Twitter - @FieldGullsFacebook - Field Gulls: For Seattle Seahawks News and AnalysisSeahawks regular season schedule 2018September9/9: L 27-24 at Denver Broncos 9/17: L 24-17 at Chicago Bears 9/23: W 24-13 vs. Dallas Cowboys9/30: at Arizona Cardinals (1:05 PM PT, FOX)October10/7: vs. Los Angeles Rams (1:25 PM PT, FOX)10/14: “at” Oakland Raiders in London (10 AM PT, FOX)10/21: BYE10/28: at Detroit Lions (10 AM PT, FOX)November11/4: vs. Los Angeles Chargers (1:05 PM PT, CBS)11/11: at Los Angeles Rams (1:25 PM PT, CBS)11/15 (Thu): vs. Green Bay Packers (5:20 PM PT, FOX/NFL Network)11/25: at Carolina Panthers (10 AM PT, FOX)December12/2: vs. San Francisco 49ers (5:20 PM PT, NBC)12/10 (Mon): vs. Minnesota Vikings (5:15 PM PT, ESPN)12/16: at San Francisco 49ers (1:05 PM PT, FOX)12/23: vs. Kansas City Chiefs (5:20 PM PT, NBC)12/30: vs. Arizona Cardinals (1:25 PM PT, FOX)

Franko Discussion / New York Jets Flight Connections 10/07/18

The New York Jets initial 2018 roster cuts to get down to a 53 man roster are done. What comes next for the 2018 Jets roster? The Jets and every other NFL team have been busy putting in waiver claims on some of the 1000+ players waived this weekend. The time for putting in such claims expires at 12:00 noon EDT today, September 2. Shortly thereafter word will begin to trickle out regarding which players the Jets and all other NFL teams successfully claimed on waivers. The Jets are sixth in waiver priority , meaning if any of the five teams ahead of the Jets (Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans , Denver Broncos) puts in a claim on any player the Jets also claim, the Jets will not be awarded that player.Any player successfully claimed by the Jets will be placed on the 53 man roster, and a corresponding roster move will need to be made to create space for the claimed player. This may or may not entail cutting a player. Roster space can also be created with trades or via the various reserved lists, such as injured reserve. At 1:00 pm Sunday teams can begin to assemble their practice squads. Players may only be signed to a practice squad after they have cleared waivers , meaning no other team has claimed them. The vast majority of players cut this weekend will go unclaimed, and those with no more than two years of eligible service on an NFL 53 man roster will then be eligible to be signed to a practice squad. In general practice squads consist largely of players cut by the same team the day before. Teams have the most familiarity with players they’ve had in camp all summer. However a team with a good scouting operation should be able to identify some better players from other teams’ cuts, and can poach such players for their own practice squads.Practice squad players make a minimum of $7600 per week, or approximately $130 ,000 for a full 17 week season, payable on a weekly basis during the season. All practice squad salaries count against the salary cap. With ten practice squad spots available the entire practice squad costs about $1.3 million in 2018 cap space. In theory there is no upper limit to the compensation paid to members of the practice squad. Occasionally a team will pay a particularly promising developmental player significantly more than the minimum to keep them away from other NFL teams. However the vast majority of practice squad players make the minimum.Finalizing waiver claims and filling the practice squad will keep the Jets busy the next day or two. Then roster changes will slow down considerably, as the focus turns towards getting ready for the first game of the regular season against the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football.

Franko Discussion / Jalen Ramsey and Dante Fowler Jr. to return
« on: December 28, 2018, 10:15:09 pm »
to the Jaguars on Monday As many of you already know Jacksonville Jaguars T-Shirt , cornerback Jalen Ramsey and defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. were suspended on Sunday night for “violating team rules and conduct unbecoming of a Jaguars football player.” Although the Jaguars didn’t officially announce the length of the suspension, Ian Rapoport reported that it would last one week for both players. We can now confirm that to be true. Doug Marrone addressed the media this morning, and repeatedly said that Ramsey and Fowler will return to the team this coming Monday.Marrone was asked several times about what his thought process was for the decision, but he would not comment on the specifics of the situation and wanted to keep it as an internal. Fowler was involved in multiple scuffles during this past Sunday’s practice, including with tight end James O’Shaughnessy and fellow defensive end Yannick Ngakoue. A reporter asked Marrone specifically why Fowler was suspended and not Ngakoue, and if Fowler was the “aggressor” in the fight. “Again Jacksonville Jaguars Hats , I’m not gonna [SIC] comment on that, you know, and I’m OK, I know that everyone has to ask it, but again, those decisions are internal Jacksonville Jaguars Hoodie , and team violations, and those are private.”It’s also worth noting that the Jaguars head coach does not expect any problems in the locker room between Fowler and Ngakoue, or any of the other players.Jalen Ramsey was suspended for going after the media. Marrone was also asked why Ramsey’s actions warranted the suspension: “Again, I think that I’m not gonna [SIC] go through my thought process or what goes into it,” Marrone said. “I’ve spoken to the players, and (Ramsey and Fowler) will be back Monday.” Moral of the story: Marrone was very tight-lipped on how the team is handling the suspensions Cheap Customized Jacksonville Jaguars Jerseys , and what — if any — communication there will be between the suspended players and the Jaguars, but both players will be back Monday. Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey has been no stranger to verbal volleying during his NFL career, but it has usually come between him and offensive players. This week’s episode involved another defensive player, however. Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore said that Ramsey’s habit of talking a lot wasn’t his style because “a lot of guys that talk are mostly zone guys” because they have more energy left over than those who play man.Ramsey expressed surprise to be taking a shot from another defensive player when he was asked about Gilmore’s thoughts on Thursday.“I never understood why someone on the same side of the ball would hate another guy,” Ramsey said, via “I’m going to continue to do what the team asks for me to do , either man or zone. Maybe he should try it also — I’m All-Pro. Maybe I’m a threat or something. It’s lame, it’s corny. But that’s him, though. I play a good mix of both. I think everybody knows that.”Gilmore’s comments about Ramsey’s energy level came a few days after Tony Romo of CBS said he thought Ramsey looked tired as last Sunday’s loss to the Chiefs unfolded. Ramsey admitted on Thursday that he was worn out by the end of a matchup with Tyreek Hill that he said “felt like a track meet.”Whether in zone or man, the Cowboys receiving corps isn’t likely to make the same impact on Ramsey this Sunday.

Franko Discussion / Chad Kelly: ‘I’ve got to watch more film
« on: December 25, 2018, 12:30:00 am »
than ever before’ It was #ChadKellyWatch on #BroncosTwitter today as the once “Mr. Irrelevant” draft pick became a very relevant quarterback on the field Youth Adam Gotsis Jersey , officially moving up the depth chart to No. 2.If you’re a big Chad Kelly fan, the quarterback’s comments after his practice with the twos today will only confirm your support. Crediting his teammates for his move up the depth chart, it was as if Kelly spent some time at the Peyton Manning School of Pressers.“Those guys made the plays, they got me in the right protections and the guys with the ball in their hands made plays,” Kelly said. “Like I said, it’s not just me that got to that position. It’s those other guys around me that helped me get there.”But Kelly is the first to admit that he still has work to do and that only increases now that he’s working with the second team offense.“You just have to work hard. That’s really what it is. Even the best ones are still working extremely hard. They don’t know everything,” Kelly said, adding that as just a second-year guy, he “doesn’t know anything.” “I have to watch more film than I ever have before,” he said, “and you know when your time is called, you better be ready to step up and go.”Earlier in the day on “First & 10 @ 10 ,” Ryan Edwards, Andrew Mason and Steve Atwater talked with Matt Boyer of Broncos TV about whether the “Kelly hype” is real - and the consensus was “yes.”“We have been talking about how well he commanded huddle in training camp, and that chemistry definitely translated [to Saturday’s game],’” Boyer said, adding that Kelly had “great command coming up to the line and his awareness of the defense was amazing.”When it was finally time for practice and Kelly was with the twos, #BroncosTwitter went on full Kelly alert.Edwards, Mase and Atwater had discussed the situation if Kelly were to get the second-team nod for the upcoming joint practices with the Bears this week, and Edwards even compared the fan love for Kelly to that of Kyle Sloter last season. “But there’s a developmental process that needs to happen,” Edwards pointed out, wondering if Kelly is ready. “If you were to throw him out against the ones, we’d be saying a few different things.”True. And Boyer believes that is exactly what what the Broncos will try to answer this week - will Kelly, or even Paxton Lynch , be a viable backup this season - or do the Broncos need to look for a veteran as backup going into the season?“Kelly proved he can handle the third-stringers. Now can he take the next step, and what is that next step?” Boyer said, adding that it will be “very interesting” and “very, very exciting” for fans if Kelly is taking those second-team reps at the end of the week. But Boyer doesn’t believe the Broncos should give up on Lynch yet either and Mase noted that the third year is a “fork in the road” for quarterbacks - either you stay or you get ready to go.“A backup QB is like a fire extinguisher,” Mason said. “You don’t want to need them but you want them to be reliable when you do.” And although Kelly has officially moved up to No. 2 and Lynch down to No. 3, Boyer still wants to see Lynch have time on the field.“I think Paxton has faced a lot of adversity. You’ve got to keep putting him out there. You can’t write him off,” Boyer said. “He’s got to have an opportunity to get better. These next two games are very important.”Demaryius Thomas excited for turnover-free Broncos offense You could hear the excitement in his voice. It’s safe to say fans of the Denver Broncos had the same reaction as Demaryius Thomas when they think about the prospects this week. How good can this offense be if the offense eliminates the turnovers? As Andrew Mason pointed out in his question to the Broncos receiver on Friday’s 1st & 10 @ 10 on Orange and Blue 760, the offense still put up 470 yards, 324 in the air and 146 on the ground. If Case Keenum gets rid of his interceptions, watch out. “Man, I don’t even know what the word is for it,” Thomas said after a few seconds of chuckling. “I know we did some great things Youth Royce Freeman Jersey , and we continue to build to do some great things. If we didn’t turn the ball this past week, you never know what the score could have been, or what the game could have been. I felt as a group, as a team, from watching film, we went out and played great ball. We were physical and I think we took over the game, despite those turnovers. “If we can go out and do that each week, especially on the offensive side of the ball, we can be a dangerous team.”

Franko Discussion / One of the big coaching changes the Seattle Seahawks
« on: December 24, 2018, 10:25:43 pm »
made during the offseason was to replace offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell with Brian Schottenheimer , and following his lack of success in six seasons for the New York Jets and then St. Louis, but now Los Angeles Rams, many of us were highly critical of the move. I remain highly critical of the move for reasons that I believe will begin to show in the second half, but that discussion is for tomorrow, as today’s discussion is to give a very, very high level overview of how the Hawks offense is attacking defenses through the first half of the season. So, before I get too far off course, the Seahawks are of course running a variant of the Air Coryell offense, a system that has been used by offensive coordinators you’ve heard of such as Al Saunders, Norv Turner, Mike Martz, Cam Cameron and a host of others. The goal of this piece is not to give a breakdown of the specifics of an individual play or a series, if you want those, Matty Brown’s breakdowns are where you should turn. The purpose of this article is to simply foster an understanding of the Air Coryell system at the most simple conceptual levels. The most basic premise of Air Coryell is to stress the defense by putting all five skill positions players into the pattern as receivers. Then based on reading the defense pre-snap, the quarterback should be able to anticipate which matchup is most likely to be open, thus becoming the first read for the quarterback. Of the five skill position players who should be in the pattern as targets for the offense, the routes they are running will be broken down into three different categories. Those categories are a deep route (go, corner, post , etc), a two receiver combination that should be successful against zone defense anda two receiver combination that should be successful against man defense. It is this set of three different route options, in connection with a run variant that makes up what has been referred to as the "high-tech" component of the Air Coryell offense. When Russell Wilson gets to the line of scrimmage after breaking the huddle, he effectively has three plays to choose from - a running play, a passing play designed to counter zone coverage and a passing play designed to counter man coverage. So, what happens is that Russ gets to the line, reads the defense, and based on what the game plan calls for him to do when he gets specific reads, he then makes his line calls to let the rest of the offense know what’s coming. This system allows Russ to pick and choose the matchups that are most advantageous to the team, and to effectively target where the weakest point in the defense will be. If the defense is in a zone, putting two potential targets in the area of a single defender, or flushing a defender out of an area and then filling that area with another target is the type of route combination that will be used against zone coverage. Against man coverage, Russ should know ahead of time where he has one on one coverage in an advantageous matchup. The team showed this repeatedly in the Week 8 game against the Detroit Lions, picking apart the Lions defense repeatedly when they would go into man coverage. According to former Field Gulls author Samuel Gold, now of The Athletic, the Lions were in man coverage on 16 of Wilson’s 19 dropbacks against Detroit. This man coverage allowed the offense to take advantage of the mismatch of David Moore being covered by second year cornerback Teez Tabor and simplified Russell Wilson's job.In any case, so far this season it seems as though the Seahawks are using the running game almost as a stall tactic while they wait for the defense to show the desired matchup, at which point they shoot for the big play deep to Tyler Lockett or one of their other receivers. In the past I’ve referred to the running game as a similar to sitting at the slot machine, and the offense as a person sitting there Authentic Shaquem Griffin Jersey , feeding it money and pulling the handle while waiting for a big payoff, and this remains true. However, what it appears the Seahawks offense is doing this season is that rather than simply sitting at the slot machine feeding it money and hoping for a big play, that’s not all they’re doing. At the same time, they have a spotter standing watch at the blackjack table counting cards, and when the count becomes advantageous, the offense is jumping over to the blackjack table to bet big and go after the big play. (Author's note: I don't recommend you ever actually try that in a casino because odds are you will be very hastily removed from the premises.)That philosophy has so far led the Hawks to a 4-3 record, with a very important four game stretch starting in Week 9 against the Los Angeles Chargers. The next month represents the most difficult stretch the Hawks are likely to face over the 2018 season, and in particular the defenses the Hawks face could pose an issue to the success of the offense not because of talent, but simply because of scheme. For much of the next four games it will be all about execution for the offense, and in Saturday's piece I'll go into greater detail why. This week’s trip to London apparently isn’t sitting well with Raiders wide receiver Martavis Bryant.Bryant was a late addition to the Raiders’ injury report today, with an illness. The Raiders are listing him as questionable for tomorrow’s game against the Seahawks at Wembley Stadium. The entire year has been a strange one for Bryant and the Raiders. They acquired him in a trade with the Steelers by sending their third-round draft pick to Pittsburgh, a surprising move given how unreliable Bryant had been for the Steelers, on the field and especially off the field. Then the Raiders cut Bryant amid reports that he was in danger of getting suspended under the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. Then the Raiders re-signed Bryant, and there has been no suspension. But there has been little production. Through four games with Oakland, Bryant has just 12 catches for 202 yards, and no touchdowns. The Raiders were reportedly optimistic that he was making positive steps, but the illness could slow him down on Sunday.

Franko Discussion / Report details Jets’ embrace of analytics
« on: December 24, 2018, 10:10:32 pm »
Rich Cimini’s Sunday notes column provides some information on how the Jets are incorporating data into the organization. The use of analytics in sports is always a hot topic of discussion these days Neal Sterling Jersey , and I think it is misunderstood. There aren’t two extremes where a team must either adhere solely to old school subjective analysis or use numbers while totally disregarding traditional methods of player evaluation. There is a lot more information out there for teams to utilize in making decisions than there used to be. There was a time in football when teams had no objective way to measure raw speed. Then the 40 yard dash was created. Nobody would totally throw out their scouting reports and base a decision on drafting a player based on a 40 yard dash time (aside from maybe Al Davis in the last decade of his life). It was just a new factor for the team to consider along with all of the other information. No NFL team is going to discard its entire scouting department for number crunchers. Nor should they. But if numbers can provide some information on matchups, optimal strategy, training tips, or traits that are found in successful players, a team would be foolish to ignore them.Simply taking an interest in data is not helpful on its own. The effectiveness comes down to the quality of the data the team is using and the quality of the people compiling and interpreting the data. It is still nice to see the Jets showing us that they are willing to step into the 21st century and take advantage of new information available to them.Instant Takeaways: Giants 22, Jets 16 The Jets dropped the Snoopy Bowl to the Giants by a score of 22-16. As always, the score is the last thing that matters in a preseason game. Here are my positive and negative takeaways from the game.POSITIVESSam Darnold has earned the starting job - Darnold posted another “meh” box score line, completing 8 of 16 passes for 86 yards (a measly 5.4 yards per attempt) and an 87.0 quarterback rating Authentic Doug Middleton Jersey , but the man was on point once again. He was helped out by a few very nice plays by his starting supporting cast, but also hurt by a few drops, while adding a clutch rush for a first on 3rd down. Darnold was active before the snap and poised after it once again, looking every bit like a player who is mentally ready to lead an NFL team. Darnold deserves to start in Detroit.Starting skill positions - The Jets’ starting skill players made quite a few plays on the Giants’ first team defense. Robby Anderson (though he did have one drop), Quincy Enunwa, Isaiah Crowell, Bilal Powell, and Terrelle Pryor all helped the Jets score a pair of touchdowns in the first half.Leonard Williams - He dominated the Giants offensive front in the run and pass game Youth Brandon Copeland Jersey , also coming up with a fumble recovery in the red zone.Avery Williamson - Williamson led the team with 9 tackles and had a key strip in the red zone. He looks capable of matching the productivity of Demario Davis last season. Can he translate his run defense to an every-down role and improve enough in coverage like Davis did?Neville Hewitt - The reserve inside linebacker has stood out over the first two games and continued that against the Giants, once again showing great instincts and finding himself constantly involved and making plays on the football short of the sticks.Frankie Luvu - Luvu came up with the splash play he sorely needed, sacking Kyle Lauletta off the edge late in the game for the team’s only sack of the night. At about 4 years younger than any other outside linebacker on the roster, Luvu has a solid case for a roster spot in a bare position group through that upside alone. Showing up with a big play definitely was a big stock-raiser for him.Henry Anderson - Anderson created a ton of pressure in the pass game. I can see him claiming the Steve McLendon title this year - having a consistently very positive impact under the disguise of a pedestrian box score line.NEGATIVESPenalties - I have staunchly defended Todd Bowles when discussing this issue, as the man did spearhead a team that was top 5 in fewest penalties from 2015-16, but this is something that can’t continue in the regular season. 13 penalties for 108 yards is unacceptable. It’s the preseason, though. There’s time to iron it out, so don’t come calling for Bowles’ head because of one preseason game. You can blame players for penalties. There’s not much Bowles can do when Brent Qvale decides to clench another man’s jersey. Regardless , as the head coach, every issue that arises is by nature of the position at least partially on Bowles - and his staff. Whoever is most at fault, the Jets just need to fix the penalty issue. It’s been a problem all throughout camp and preseason.Special Teams - Issues persisted in literally every phase of this unit. Trenton Cannon fumbled away a kick return for his third fumble in two games. The Jets allowed a punt return TD and still allowed a 15.0 yard return average on the other 6 punt returns they faced. Taylor Bertolet’s perfection ended with a missed extra point. Lachlan Edwards landed only 1 of 7 punts inside of the 20 - punting short on the touchdown and following it with line drives that were too far ahead of the coverage. It was an all-in-all atrocious outing for this unit. Again, hopefully things can be ironed out before the real games start, and the team can decide on a lineup that works.Secondary - The Jets still have not allowed a touchdown on defense, but they did not get great performances from the corners tonight. Morris Claiborne and Juston Burris in particular both struggled.Brent Qvale - Man, this guy just finds a way to stand out negatively each week. He is not passable. The Jets sorely need Kelvin Beachum and the rest of this line to get healthy. There is no depth on this unit whatsoever.Tight ends - None of the tight ends separated themselves in their competition tonight. Eric Tomlinson had two false start penalties and struggled as a blocker. Clive Walford and Chris Herndon failed to collect any catches as they both failed to haul in one catchable target each. Neal Sterling was the winner of the day by default with a 13-yard first down pickup on an underneath route.

Franko Discussion / The Jacksonville Jaguars head
« on: December 24, 2018, 09:47:47 pm »
into the bye weekend at 3-5 and their offense in shambles. The only hope for it to improve rests on the legs of running back Leonard Fournette Youth Marcell Dareus Jersey , who has missed most of the season with a hamstring injury. The offensive line has struggled so much the Jaguars coaching staff said they didn’t have confidence to even try running the ball against the Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback Blake Bortles has come crashing back to earth, already benched once and looking like he could be replaced in the offseason.Man, that’s a rough eight games coming off a season that was on the doorstep of the Super Bowl.So what happened to the Jaguars offense? The popular talking point right now is that the Jaguars invested everything on the defensive side of the ball and ignored their offense. While I do think that the Jaguars took some huge gambles this offseason on the offensive side of the ball that has blown up in their face, I think the position that they ignored the offensive side of the ball while building the defense is inexplicably incorrect. They just invested in it a different way. Here is what Jaguars general manager has added to the offensive side of the ball since he became the general manager:second overall pick offensive tackle (Luke Joeckel)high priced free agent guard (Zane Beadles)high priced free agent tight end (Julius Thomas)third overall pick on quarterback (Blake Bortles)second round wide receiver (Marqise Lee)second round wide receiver (Allen Robinson)second round wide receiver (D.J. Chark)second round running back (T.J. Yeldon)third round center (Brandon Linder)third round guard (A.J. Cann)high priced free agent tackle (Jermey Parnell)high priced free agent guard (Andrew Norwell)high priced free agent running back (Chris Ivory)mid-tier priced free agent running back (Toby Gerhart)fourth overall running back (Leonard Fournette)second round offensive tackle (Cam Robinson)mid-tier priced free agent tight end (Austin Seferian-Jenkins)expensive one-year free agent wide receiver (Donte Moncrief)traded for a running back (Carlos Hyde)This only counting draft picks used through Day 2 of the NFL Draft and not including things like paying Allen Hurns, which is an investment, or other ancillary moves for the offense. To say that the Jaguars didn’t invest in the offense is a misnomer. They did, and they invested quite a bit. The biggest difference is they missed. They missed on a lot of those moves on the offense and that’s a big reason why they’re where they’re at. They chose to invest a little bit more on draft picks and their development on the offensive side of the ball, while investing in veterans on the defensive side and expecting to be in a lot of close games carried by the defense while the offensive players grow and develop. The problem is those players by and large didn’t and the veterans you signed to supplement them went bust. You have a bad combination of draft picks not working out, high priced free agents flopping and a quarterback who needs a lot of things around him to go right, rather than being a quarterback who can elevate others when things go awry. The conversation shouldn’t be why the Jaguars haven’t put anything around Blake Bortles on offense or if they invested enough into it, but it should be about the people who were doing the investing. So many things send NFL coaches into a tizzy. Most of them get addressed immediately. The one item they can't get done quickly, and often not at all, is finding consistency.Rarely have the first six weeks of a season provided so many up-and-down performances, from weaklings to world beaters Cheap Blake Bortles Jersey , from turnover machines to takeaway monsters.Consider that there are seven teams with 3-3 marks, and another one, Green Bay, at 2-2-1 heading into its Monday nighter against San Francisco. There also are eight other clubs within a half-game or full game of the break-even mark. Had the Panthers and Redskins, both 3-2, and Lions (2-3) not had byes, they might well be .500 clubs now. Those with a positive approach will call it competitive balance. We'll stick with mediocrity. And, most maddeningly, inconsistency."Yes, it always hurts more when you know you beat yourself, but that's part of the game," Carolina wide receiver Torrey Smith said after a 23-17 defeat at Washington in which the Panthers lost the turnover battle 3-0. "Sometimes you overcome it, sometimes you don't. There's no one particular person at fault. We know it's us as a team."Great teams play well all four quarters. Good teams do it sporadically. If we want to be great, we have to be consistent. We had our chances , but we got to be able to do it every Sunday."What so many NFL teams do is dominate one week, deliver a dud the next. In Week 6, we had:—Chicago (3-2), so powerful in its previous game before a bye, blowing a big lead at Miami (4-2), which was coming off messing up a 17-0 edge at Cincinnati in Week 5.—Dallas (3-3), inept offensively in a prime-time failure at Houston, turning around and pummeling Jacksonville 40-7. The Jaguars seemed like a special group after a 3-1 start that included beating New England. They are now 3-3 with two poor showings in a row.—Tennessee (3-3), which has followed three successive victories with two awful displays of invisible offense, including falling at Cleveland (2-3-1), a team that was hammered Sunday by the Chargers. Indeed, the Titans, Jaguars and Texans, who lost their opening three before winning the next three games Youth Myles Jack Jersey , are tied atop the AFC South. At .500.—Seattle (3-3), where Pete Carroll is doing one of the best coaching jobs of his career in keeping a retooling — say rebuilding in the Emerald City and you will be thrown into Puget Sound — club competitive. But still inconsistent, despite a 27-3 thrashing of the hapless Raiders.—Pittsburgh (3-2-1), which once again stole a win at Cincinnati, a regular occurrence over nearly the last two decades. The Steelers have so many issues on and off the field that keeping them from sinking the season is paramount now compared to finding any steadiness.Don't expect much of this to change as we move deep into autumn and then into winter. While there are a few teams that are quite good and a bunch that are very bad, the truth about the NFL these days is that the majority of clubs are so-so.Some can't find a consistent offense to balance a solid defense, including the three AFC South leaders."I also know that we're not going to be able to be where we want to be unless we figure this thing out on offense," Houston coach Bill O'Brien admitted Sunday. "And figure out what we have to do to be able to run the ball, throw the ball consistently, and at times we look like a good offense, not really today, but at times we have this season. We have to figure that out."Others can move the ball, put up some points, but not regularly stop anybody. The Steelers and Vikings Cheap Cam Robinson Jersey , two teams with a history of strong defense, won't remind you of the Steel Curtain or the Purple People Eaters right now.Even some of the true contenders, such as Kansas City and New England, have great offenses and sieve-like Ds.Injuries always are a plague in the search for consistency. The schedule, especially when weather becomes an issue, can be, too.Still, the folks at the league offices won't bemoan ordinariness when it means those teams will be carrying the playoff races down to the end of the schedule. And fans of those teams will be thrilled that, even at 9-7 or 8-8, their guys are in the thick of things, consistency be damned.

Franko Discussion / Panthers safety Eric Reid and Eagles counterpart
« on: December 09, 2018, 09:14:31 pm »
Malcolm Jenkins care about many of the same causes. But they clearly have differences of opinion about how to go about addressing them. The two exchanged words prior to Sunday’s game , and after the Panthers comeback win, Reid was terse in his description. When asked if he wanted to describe the altercation, he initially said no, before throwing the haymaker.“He’s a sellout,” Reid said, via David Newton of repeated the charge, and then replied in the affirmative if that was the cause of the dust-up. Asked if Jenkins said anything specifically to him, Reid replied: “His actions speak louder than his words.”Reid has had a problem with the league and Jenkins, since the Eagles safety took a lead role in the Players Coalition deal with owners, which Reid has referred to as an “NFL-funded subversion group.”Those disagreements boiled over Sunday.UPDATE 5:03 p.m. ET: Jenkins took the high road. Via Elliott Shorr-Parks of WIP, Jenkins said he wasn’t going to make any negative comments about Reid, and wanted to keep the focus on the issues. Sunday’s visit from the New York Giants marked a reunion of sorts. Former Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettlman was in the building, as was former offensive coordinator Mike Shula. The latter was routinely the brunt of near universal criticism during his final years in charge of the Panthers offense Greg Olsen Jersey , largely thanks to the ultra conservative play calling Panthers fans have come to know and hate. It seemed his mere presence in the stadium was enough to put the Panthers offense in a state of complete disorder. The delay of game penalties and wasted timeouts that seemed to be a thing of the past once again reared their heads, and the infamous “grind it out” approach to offense once again manifested itself. Norv Turner called a good first quarter. On six first quarter first downs, the Panthers passed the ball three times, completing all of them for 44 yards and a touchdown. The other three plays were runs, but one of them was a piece of gadgetry that resulted in an 18 yard carry for wide receiver D.J. Moore. That’s the type of balance you like to see. Then things went south. Odell Beckham Jr. botched a punt that was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown to put the Panthers up 14-3 less than one minute into the second quarter. The Panthersseemingly deemed that 11 point lead with 44 minutes to go insurmountable. The ensuing first down play calls to close out the first half were run, pass, run, run, run, run. Just grind the clock, baby. The Panthers seemed to break themselves of that play calling curse in the locker room during the halftime intermission. They split their six third quarter play calls 50/50, calling three runs and three passes, but that increased aggression vanished in crunch time. The Panthers entered the fourth quarter with a 20-16 lead and the ball just short of midfield.Starting with that precarious lead in the final frame Fozzy Whittaker Color Rush Jersey , the Panthers went on to call this sequence of first down plays while leading: screen pass, run, run, run, screen pass, run, run, run. The two Cam Newton runs in that sequence generated 16 yards. The other six plays combined to gain five yards. The Panthers also lost their lead. With the Giants desperately hunting a comeback and the Panthers in need of offense, the coaching staff frequently elected to take the ball out of their most dynamic playmaker’s hands on first downs. It resulted in an offense constantly fighting an uphill battle to sustain drives and put the game out of reach. A historic Graham Gano field goal as time expired gave the coaching staff the result they sought despite a horribly flawed process that could have, and perhaps should have lost them the game. The Panthers overcame their own flawed game management once again to pull out a victory, but it’s fair to wonder how long this can be sustained.

Franko Discussion / Chicago Bears vs New England Patriots Preview
« on: December 09, 2018, 09:06:20 pm »
Which Players to Watch For The Chicago Bears are coming off of an incredibly difficult loss to the Dolphins. We can make all the excuses we want Tarik Cohen Color Rush Jersey , but the fact remains that the Bears did not play well enough to come home victorious. The good news about that is that the Bears, especially on defense, should be embarrassed and hopefully play that way. Against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, they will need every ounce of the anger that they are assuredly feeling after watching that film. In a surprise (to some), Mitch Trubisky has stacked together 2 good games. Bill Belichick has a way of ruining young quarterbacks, so this will be a huge test for Trubisky. The key will be for Matt Nagy to understand how Andy Reid’s system has been able to beat the Patriots defense over the years and exploit it. If Nagy can call the right game, and Trubisky can execute, this game is certainly not the unwinnable game it appeared when the schedule came out. Here is my list of players to keep an eye on Sunday afternoon.Who to WatchTarik Cohen: My guess is that the Patriots will try and take away someone and I think the easiest players for them to target are Allen Robinson II and Trey Burton. The Patriots lack speed and athleticism on defense, that should lend itself to the Bears speedsters getting some favorable match-ups. Look for Tarik Cohen to be used a bit more in the running game this week and to get a few chunk plays in doing so. Taylor Gabriel: The other speedster on the Bears offense is Taylor Gabriel, who is having a very nice season to date. The Patriots are susceptible to pure speed and Gabriel has plenty of that. So far, Gabriel has done most of his damage deep. This could be a situation where we see Gabriel do a little more on crossing routes or other shorter routes that typically lead to a lot of yards after the catch. But don’t sleep on the deep ball either...Akiem Hicks: The key to attacking Brady and the Patriots offense is pushing the interior of the pocket and getting in his face. If Brady has a pocket to step up into, you might as well pack it in, he will pick you apart. Akiem Hicks is going to have to do 2 things well. First, he needs to collapse the pocket as much as possible. Second , he has to force the blocking scheme to him to allow his teammates to also get push inside. The Patriots lament the loss of Hicks, let’s make this one really hurt. Roquan Smith: Roquan Smith is pulling a very difficult assignment in this game. He will be tasked with stopping Sony Michel and James White in the running game, then turning around and covering White and Rob Gronkowski in the passing game. I feel for Smith, this is as tall an order as you will find against an NFL team, but he certainly has the talent to do so. Smith played really well last week, he is going to need to be at least that good again on Sunday. What are your thoughts? Which Bears players are you keeping an eye on this Sunday afternoon against the Patriots?Stay tuned for my Three Keys to the Game tomorrow morning and in case you missed it, here is my What to Watch For from earlier today.Week 7 DVOA notes: The Bears miss a healthy Khalil Mack, while their offense continues to rise Have as sparkling a first four games defensively as the 2018 Bears did, and it’s going to be difficult to sink their rankings in advanced metrics entirely. Numbers can indeed be propped up by prior performance. The Bears have been gashed in two straight weeks by the Dolphins and Patriots, yet somehow still possess the No. 1 overall defense in Football Outsiders’ DVOA. Part of them maintaining that stranglehold is the fact that they’ve been able to create six turnovers even as their defense has taken steps back in recent weeks. The other part of it, is that no one in the NFL really plays great defense anymore. Chicago has the worst defense to ever rank at No. 1 overall seven weeks into an NFL season. This is a passing league with an abundance of bend-but-don’t-break defenses. Chances are that isn’t the case if Khalil Mack doesn’t roll his ankle in Miami 10 days ago, as the Bears would’ve continued to run roughshod on the league. But, it’s a fact nonetheless, and a question they must answer for as Mack certainly won’t be 100 percent again any time soon. Offensive performance is a different story for these Bears Aaron Lynch Jersey , as they continue to ascend according to the numbers. They haven’t yet put together a 60-minute performance against a quality defense, but continue to show explosive bursts in intermittent periods most NFL offensive coordinators would be envious of. In their last three games, the Bears have averaged over 470 yards of offense a game and 36 points. That kind of production led by Matt Nagy and Mitchell Trubisky has translated into pro football’s No. 13 overall offense in DVOA. This comes after consistently ranking in the bottom over the first three games.Say what you justifiably will about Trubisky’s errant ways as a developing passer, but this Bears offense is on the right track provided they can continue to progress. Where the Bears experienced the most precipitous drop after their 38-31 defeat to the Patriots on Sunday is in special teams play. Going in, Chris Tabor’s crew had the No. 9 overall third phase. After allowing two special teams scores in one game, they have dropped all the way down to No. 25 overall and have a lot of ground to make up. Given that there are often only a max of 15 to 16 special teams plays a game, it’ll be awhile before Tabor and company can improve their standing. Fortunately, a reeling Jets team visits Chicago this week, so the Bears can pump up all of their relevant numbers against a team they should beat. The key there: should. Franko Discussion / Cowboys Poll: Which linebacker should see
« on: December 09, 2018, 08:57:41 pm »
more time Jay Novacek Color Rush Jersey , Sean Lee or Leighton Vander Esch? It seems incredibly likely that Sean Lee will return to the field this Sunday when the Cowboys take on the Washington Redskins. For the first time ever, the Cowboys defense isn’t aching for his return, as rookie Leighton Vander Esch has been spectacular filling in. In fact , he’s been the best rookie linebacker so far. Dallas is certainly eager to get a veteran as talented as Lee back on the field. When they line up in their base 4-3 formations, they could possibly get Lee on the field at the same time as Vander Esch. They would need to move LVE to the strong side in that situation assuming Jaylon Smith stays in the middle, relegating Damien Wilson to the bench. When they switch to a nickel package Charles Haley Jersey , they’ll have to choose between linebackers if we assume that Jaylon Smith will stay on the field for most of the snaps. The Cowboys will have to do some swapping of positions, but in the end who should get the majority of the snaps next to Smith, Lee or Vander Esch? Cowboys wide receiver Cole Beasley may have been down short of the sticks on a catch late in the fourth quarter of Thursday night’s win over the Saints L. P. Ladouceur Color Rush Jersey , but the officials marked it as a first down and the Saints were out of timeouts so they couldn’t challenge the spot of the ball. The first down still came at a cost for Beasley and the Cowboys. Beasley injured his foot and had to hobble to the sideline after the play.On Friday, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said that the team is “hopeful” that Beasley will not be out for an extended period of time. Beasley had two catches for nine yards on Thursday and has 48 catches for 468 yards and two touchdowns on the year.Garrett said he is also hopeful that left tackle Tyron Smith can return to practice once the Cowboys get back on the field next week. Smith has missed the last two games due to a stinger and an elbow issue.

Franko Discussion / The only thing missing from the Chiefs‘ rout
« on: December 09, 2018, 08:51:29 pm »
KANSAS CITY Ronnie Harrison Jersey , Mo. of the Jaguars on Sunday was discipline. The Chiefs forced five turnovers on defense, returning one of Blake Bortles‘ four interceptions for a touchdown. Their high-scoring offense gained more than 400 yards behind Patrick Mahomes‘ efficient air assault and Kareem Hunt‘s hard running. And their special teams were simply steady. But a little of that shine was dulled by the ejections of defensive tackle Chris Jones and pass rusher Dee Ford, both in聽the second half of the Chiefs’ 30-14 victory.Jones, whose pick-six electrified Arrowhead Stadium earlier in the game, was crushed to the ground as Jacksonville attempted an extra point. For no apparent reason, Jones drove his right elbow into the thigh of the聽Jacksonville player beneath him, right in front of an official a few yards away.Ford’s ejection was a bit less egregious. He was flagged twice for unsportsmanlike conduct, the second of which came for standing over Bortles after chasing him into the Kansas City bench area.“We have to keep ourselves under control emotionally. When two good football teams play each other, there’s going to be emotion,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “This is a team that’s going to try to be physical and push you around at your place, and you can’t let that happen, either, so you have to put your foot down. But you have to do it the right way.”Jones and Ford were both absent from the locker room after the game.“We have to learn from that. You surely can’t be ejected from the game. That’s not smart football,” Reid said. “Nobody is going to push us around anywhere, but be smart with it.”Especially considering the Chiefs (5-0) visit New England next weekend. The Jaguars (3-2) also were chippy throughout the game, but聽they at least had reason to unload their frustration.聽Bortles and the offense struggled with turnovers, and a defense that was ranked No. 1 in the NFL coming into the game watched Mahomes, Hunt and the rest of the Chiefs move the ball at will.“I thought that we came out and played flat, myself included. I think they had points on every possession in the first half ,” Jaguars safety Tashaun Gipson said. “You can’t call yourself the best defense in the National Football League. I don’t care who coaches or who’s the quarterback, it just shouldn’t happen. But it happened today. So, again, they’re best offense in the National Football League for a reason. They definitely came out and showed us today.”In truth, the Chiefs made a solid argument they’re also the best team.“I don’t think (Jacksonville) is physical. I think they want to pretend like they’re physical when everything’s going good,” Chiefs cornerback Orlando Scandrick said. “I think we’re a really physical team. I think we play a physical style of defense. I think we play a very simple style of defense and do what we do better than you do what you do.”If not for the ejections, they would have done it to perfection Sunday.81View Gallery Gallery:View from the sidelines: NFL cheerleaders 2018Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports | Raj Mehta STARTQB Jared Goff, RamsGoff has so many weapons at his disposal that I’m not really worried about the Vikings defense, which has only allowed one TD pass per game. The offense has scored over 30 points in each game. He may not get the 350 Plus yards like he did last two weeks, but he is a shoe in for 250. Projection: 262 yards and 2 touchdownsQB Kirk Cousins, Vikings Yes, the Rams Defense is good, but that doesn’t scare me into benching Cousins. Over the last two weeks he has averaged throwing the ball 51 times. I believe he may need that type of volume to keep up with the Rams. With Talib and Peters out, I believe his receivers will get open for him. I expect a bitof redemption for Cousins in a game that could very well be a shootout. Projection: 275 yards, with 3 touchdowns and 1 interceptionRB Todd Gurley, RamsLook, you are starting Todd Gurley no matter what. He could be facing the a herd of speed walking zombies and I’m still starting him, but it won’t be an easy matchup. The Vikings are without Griffin, but the defense hasn’t allowed a running back to go over 60 yards this season. He is the offense Logan Cooke Color Rush Jersey , so I believe he beats that but it will be a tough. He may not be RB 1 this week but should be in top 3 for sure. Projection: 22 carries 82 yards and a score, with 4 receptions for 45 yards WR Cooper Kupp, RamsKupp has been a consistent red zone threat for Goff scoring 2 touchdowns this season. He hasn’t had a game lower then 12 fantasy points PPR and I believe he will continue with that. The Vikings defense are tough but are susceptible to the slot receivers.Projection: 5 receptions for 69 yards and 1 touchdownWR Robert Woods, RamsWoods broke out last week getting a stat line of 10-104-2. He may not have that stat line this weeks as the Vikings are a bigger mountain to climb. He has been getting 9 targets in each game so far and I think that continues. He costs 5400 dollars in Draft Kings, and I believe he is the worth the price of admission. Projection: 6 receptions for 68 yards and 1 touchdownWR Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, VikingsThe Rams defense will stop the run but I believe the passing defense will be in trouble. Their top two corners, Aquib Talib and Marcus Peters we out, so I believe both of them will have good games. Cousins is going to have to throw the ball to win this game as they may be playing catch up. Start both of them. Projection: Thielen 9 receptions for 86 yardsProjection: Diggs 6 receptions for 74 yards and 1 touchdownTE Kyle Rudolph, VikingsThe Rams have been very generous to the tight endposition allowing 260+ yards so far. I believe this is a product of having strong corners stopping the outside threat, thus forcing the quarterback to throw in the middle. However, with Peters and Talib being both out I don’t think his production will slip that much. He has been averaging around 7 targets in the last two weeks as Cousin’s looks for him.He is a red zone threat, and I believe he finds the end zone this week. Projection: 5 receptions for 52 yards and 1 touchdownRams DefenseEven with the top two corners being out, the defense is still really good. I expect them to give up some points but will make up for it with sacks and some turnovers Projection: 24 points allowed with 4 sack and 2 turnovers K Dan Bailey, VikingsI was wrong about him last week, but blame that on the game script. Vikings were down early and often thus limiting his chances to kick. I believe the Vikings will move the ball and the Rams will bend, not break, leaving him with some kicking opportunities. Projection: 2 for 2 for field goals with 3 extra pointsSIT RB Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray, VikingsCooks status is still up in the air as his hamstring is still injured. I expect him not to play as I believe the Vikings will save him for the season, and this is a shorter week. Thus even if he does play I don’t expect a good game; same for Murray too. The RamsDefense is only allowing 96 rushing yards this season and that front seven is really good. Vikes Offensive line got burned by Buffalo! What makes you think they can open running lines against Suh and Donald? I’ll sit both this week but however Andrew Norwell Jersey , in daily, I would take the risk on Murray as he is the bigger back that can push the line and is more prone to getting that goal line carry. Projection: Cook (if he plays) 15 carries for 62, with 4 receptions for 32 yardsProjection: Murray 13 carries for 43 yards, with 5 receptions for 35WR Brandin Cooks, Rams Really? Sit Cooks? Am I crazy? Maybe a little, but hear me out. Minnesota has yet to allow a receiver to go over 64 yards. As Cooks is prone to get a big play but he hasn’t don’t that yet. He has no touchdowns yet. He has been getting catches (7 in the last two games), but I see Xavier Rhodes shutting him down. Now watch, Cooks is going to explode! Projection: 4 receptions for 70 yardsTE Tyler Higbee, RamsHave to be straightforward with you guys, I had to actually look up who was the starting tight end was for the Rams. The Rams do not use the tight end as a receiver. They primarily use the tight end as an extra blocker for Todd Gurley. He only had two targets (4 on the year) last week for 35 yards, and the volume isn’t there to even constitute a start in any format. Simply enough stay away from Higbee as well as Gerald Everett, which is the second string tight end. Projection: 2-21Viking DefenseMe sitting the Vikings defense is simply the product of being scared of the Rams offense. The offense has been averaging over 30 points per game, and that stat scares the Goff out of me. Don’t give me wrong, the Vikings defense is really good, but I don’t think they can hold the Rams offense all night. They are going to give up points! Projection: 27 points with 4 sacks and 2 turnovers K Sam Ficken, Rams The Rams sign Ficken to replace the injured Greg Zurlien and I’m sitting him. He missed his only field goal last week (he did make all of his PATS) and I don’t think there will be many field goal opportunities for him. Projection: 1 for 2 on field goals, with 3 extra points

Franko Discussion / A key play from Sunday night’s Chiefs-Patriots game
« on: December 09, 2018, 08:36:41 pm »
had Kansas City applying double coverage to three options in the New England goal-line passing game Tanoh Kpassagnon Color Rush Jersey , which created an opportunity for quarterback Tom Brady to run for the end zone. And run he did.Along the way, he avoided an attempted tackle by linebacker Breeland Speaks, who later claimed that he pulled up in his effort to sack Brady for fear of a roughing-the-passer call.NFL executive V.P. of football operations Troy Vincent, speaking to ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, didn’t seem to buy Speaks’ story.“I looked at the video and Tom Brady moved up and the player missed a tackle,” Vincent told Paolantonio. “He missed an opportunity to make a sack. We have seen Tom step up thousands and thousands of times. In that particular situation, he stepped up, then he wound up running in the end zone. But that is one thing we always want to remove from a player’s mind is doubt and we think that we continue to educate, showing players what their peers are doing to make plays, but in that situation its something we have seen Tom do year in and year out , step up in the pocket, avoid a sack and wind up running into the end zone.鈥滶ven if Speaks truly was thinking about not getting a roughing call, Speaks shouldn’t have held back. He should have made the tackle, and he should have welcomed the risk of a penalty being called. After Pittsburgh’s Week Five win over the Falcons, Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt told PFT that he won’t change his playing style due in part to the inconsistencies among referees regarding what is and isn’t roughing.Speaks and every other player would benefit from adopting that same mindset. Learn good techniques, incorporate them into your game, and make tackles when tackles need to be made. It’s far too easy for the “I went too easy” explanation to be interpreted as an excuse. It’s also far too easy for that excuse to be picked apart in the film room by the defensive player’s team, as Peter King predicted on Tuesday’s PFT Live that it will be this week in Kansas City. This is part two of a three-part weekly film analysis on the performance of Patrick Mahomes. Part one here.I mentioned Tuesday that we’re nearing a point with Patrick Mahomes where it won’t matter what the defense does. That he’ll just rise above it.Franchise quarterbacks are worth well beyond the salary cap hit that they incur. They find ways to elevate organizations all around them. The circumstances weren’t perfect in New England. There were injuries on both sides of the ball, a lot of talent had to miss the game. It didn’t matter. Yes, the game started out rough Jarvis Jenkins Jersey , but regardless of the struggles, Mahomes elevated his play and made up for significant losses to come back and take the lead against Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. There are positive things from that game, and we’ll talk about a few here today.Something smartThis is a sneaky great play by Mahomes, both from the mental and physical side.Late in the third quarter, with the Chiefs trailing 27-19, Mahomes and company have a chance to come within one (they do) or tie (I would’ve) the Patriots. They’re in the red zone at the New England 14-yard line on a second-and-10. The Chiefs are lined up in a closed formation with Travis Kelce lined up into the boundary, attached to the offensive line with three receivers lined up to the field and Kareem Hunt in the backfield to the field side as well. The Patriots are showing man-free coverage (Cover 1). They had done a good job of muddying things up for Mahomes earlier in the game with a variety of tweaks to the pre-snap looks. One thing they had success with was moving one or two players in the box around after Mahomes had set the protection. On this play, Mahomes initially sets the protection to No. 23, Patrick Chung, lined up in the box but adjusts to No. 53 Patrick Mahomes II Color Rush Jersey , Kyle Van Noy. After the protection is set, Chung slides over to cover Hunt. On the snap, Van Noy blitzes. Mahomes knows it’s man-free coverage. There is a big void in the boundary-side corner of the end zone if the Chiefs can get someone over there. Luckily for them, they have the fastest player in theNFL lined up as the No. 3 receiver in the slot. Hill ran vertically for two yards and then darted to the corner of the end zone. With Kelce running an underneath route across the field, there’s plenty of space to deliver a ball. If the middle-field safety can be occupied long enough, there’s a window to throw. Mahomes knows this and holds the safety by looking to the wide side of the field. The throw is nothing short of perfect. At the absolute perfect time, Mahomes flips his hips and eyes to deliver the throw. He waited for the last second to deliver the ball into the corner. The placement, touch and accuracy of the throw were perfect. Great design to get the talent in a perfect place to succeed and excellent execution by both quarterback and receiver.Something specialThe last throw of Mahomes’ first half was something bad and led to a turnover and a lost opportunity for points. The next chance the kid got to deliver a throw? Whew. The Chiefs need to convert this critical third-and-2. Already down 24-9, they simply can’t give the ball back to the Patriots. The Chiefs are lined up in a familiar look they like to run in situations like these. They have Kelce, Hill and Hunt all lined up into the boundary in a condensed look. We talked about it in the season’s first edition of 45 seconds:Kelce is going to run a whip route , Hill is going to run a middle curl and Hunt is going to run a swing. As the video above shows, they’ve been able to hit Hunt on the swing with space to convert. The Patriots are in Cover 2, so the boundary corner is playing the flats. Mahomes wanted to hit Hunt again, but with the corner covering him, he had to improvise. He rolls to his right and Hunt turns upfield. A reminder—this is third-and-2. It’s as gutsy as it gets to deliver a ball in this situation down the field. If the Chiefs don’t convert, they’re likely to give the ball back to the Patriots who are already up two scores. That didn’t shake the kid. The second view of the throw is my favorite. This was the first pass attempt for Mahomes after his second interception. This is a critical play in prime time. In that situation, he delivers a throw with small margin for error. The fearlessness Mahomes displays rubs off on people. He’s confident and more than capable of doing things that elevate the team around him. Both sides of the ball are energized by these kinds of plays and the frequency we’re seeing them at. He’s running out of things to prove and it’s only Week 6. The kid is for real.

I’m in Colorado to watch my first game in Denver since the Broncos 2005 season. I went to the game with my buddy Dailey since he was a Detroit fan and boisterously confident in the Lions ability to “womp the @#%!” out of the Broncos. So was I , really. Tim Tebow had just taken over for Kyle Orton the previous week and completed less than half his passes in a victory over the Miami Dolphins. I wanted to believe, really. I was in high school when Tebow gave his famous “promise” speech. It gave me goosebumps. My eyes couldn’t lie though, while fans were abuzz with the Florida quarterback I saw a fullback who could throw and thought it was little more than a gimmick. On the plus side, I was a big fan of the defense for the first time in forever because John Elway had nabbed Von Miller 2nd overall in the draft. If you remember 2011, you’ll know that was the year Denver improbably made the playoffs and eventually stunned the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime. I remember guests asking about Tebow all winter as I worked in Big Sky, Montana and their confused looks as I ranted about my new favorite player, number 58.The defense literally carried Tebow to the playoffs that year, but without a little Mile High Magic, the ride would have ended in round 1.Enter Demaryius Thomas. In the Tebow offense he was basically an afterthought in 2011, posting a 32-551-4 TD line. The stats and scheme masked the burgeoning talent John Fox had inherited from Josh McDaniels, but that all changed on January 8th. Probably the single greatest game winning play in Broncos playoff history. I’ve hated the Steelers since 2005, so it was sweet revenge to see D.T. rip their still-beating hearts out of their chests. Following the season, Peyton Manning came to Denver and Thomas grew into arguably the best receiver in Denver’s history. The move yesterday made all of the sense in the world on paper. The playoffs are the longest of long shots following the 30-23 loss to the Chiefs last Sunday. Courtland Sutton is ready to step into Thomas’ role and DaeSean Hamilton and Tim Patrick need more reps in order to grow. It also made sense if Elway was going to turn around and cut Thomas after the season in order to avoid paying his 2019 salary. Thomas caught the Sheriff’s first touchdown. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt. Fans were harder on Thomas than seemed fair given his talent, at his peak he was a top 5 receiver in the league and one of the scariest playmakers at the position. I’ve long said that an NFL receiving corps is sort of built like an NBA starting lineup: the best ones have a superstar number 1, an all-star number 2 and then quality role players to compliment them. Thomas played LeBron James on arguably the best passing offense ever assembled. 5 years later it’s still hard to believe that 55-touchdown campaign came from my favorite team. So the objective, logical part of me knows that Elway made the right move, but there’s no doubt a small part of me is rooting for the Texans the rest of the way. It will be fun to see what Thomas can do with a budding star QB throwing him the ball after the short hand Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch dealt him for two years. Wish you the very best Bay Bay, in football as well as life. Stay golden. Peyton’s single game record tying touchdown pass? To D.T. There’s little doubt he did most of the work on this one. Overshadowed by Thomas’ departure are the results of last week’s game. How did the Broncos do in accomplishing the keys I laid out for victory last week?In 2 words? Not great.Key #1 Slow down Dee FordFord (55) haunted the Broncos line last Sunday. This was an abject failure. Ford had 3 sacks and completely overwhelmed the Broncos in key moments. Denver wound up just 3/12 on third down while also fumbling twice. Far too often Bolles and/or Turner were left alone with Ford and with little more than hope that one would find a way to keep him off Keenum. It didn’t work. In the 4th Quarter Keenum had a 4 play stretch where he had a sack-fumble, an interception, a sack, and then a 2-yard loss on third-and-2. Key #2 Run the Damn BallBooker had 9 carries for 78 yards and could have had even more with additional opportunities. The Broncos ran for almost 200 yards on 30 carries and would have had more if penalties hadn’t wiped out 2 huge runs. Even then Youth Adam Gotsis Jersey , both Devontae Booker and Phillip Lindsay had great games on the ground. At this point in the game the Denver backs were averaging almost 6.5 yards a carry. That doen’t hide the fact that play calling was questionable at times, with the 3rd and 2 jet sweep to Emmanuel Sanders first to mind. Both the Bronco’s backs were already gouging the Chiefs run defense and in a short yardage situation the ball was taken out of their hands. Unfortunately, this is nothing new and it seems Broncos fans should resign themselves to questionable decisions so long as Bill Musgrave is the playcaller. Key #3 Force Mahomes into mistakesEarly on it looked like the Broncos would aim to slow down Mahomes. Early in the game it looked like Joseph and Woods’ game plan had all but copied last week’s GIF Horse word for word. I mentioned then that the Broncos best chance to win is to sell out in order to limit Patrick Mahomes as best they can, even if it meant Hunt goes ham. After the first drive though, it became apparent Kareem Hunt was the marked man last week and the Broncos were going to do all they could to slow down the Chiefs running game, even if it meant giving up 300 yards, 15 first downs, and 4 touchdowns through the air. It’s debatable if the Fly Zone ever had a realistic chance to slow down Mahomes, so perhaps Joseph went with the only game plan the team could accomplish. Denver did hold Kansas City to their 2 lowest point totals on the year, it just wasn’t enough when the offense couldn’t score 30+ on the worst defense in the league. This was about as easy a TD as you’ll find in the NFL. So what will it take of the Broncos to beat the banged up Houston Texans? Key #1 Protect KeenumHouston has a variety of ways to get to the passer, it’s vital Musgrave finds a way to protect Keenum. With their return to health this season J.J. Watt, Whitney Mercilus and Jadeveon Clowney have been terrorizing opposing passers. The trio has combined for more than 50 pressures on the season, which is insane. Their production is a big part of the Houston pass defense and any of the three have the potential to force Keenum into a big mistake. What’s even scarier is how Romeo Crennell will use them as decoys in order to dial up blitz plays to attack the protection’s weak points with blitzes. It’s critical that Musgrave calls a game plan that minimizes his quarterback’s chances to commit a catastrophic mistake. The Broncos need to run early and often to manage the sticks as best they can, even if the Texans D is the league’s best run defense by DVOA.If they can stay ahead of the downs, it will go a long way towards preventing Watt and the gang from taking over. Key #2 Dink and Dunk them to DeathIt’s almost a paradox given the necessity to protect Keenum from himself, but given the Houston run defense it will be all but necessary to look to pass here and there. Incidentally, the secondary is really susceptible underneath and will be without their best cornerback in Jonathan Joseph. There will be an opportunity for plays to be made and it’s critical Keenum finds Courtland Sutton, Emmanuel Sanders and Jeff Heuerman when they’re open. It will be a bit riskier than the last few weeks though, as the Texans are one of the best teams in the league against play action passes.Key #3 Disrupt Deshaun WatsonIf the Colts can sack Watson 7 times... Twice this season the Houston QB has taken 7 sacks in a single game. He’s been hit more than any other passer in the league and has been so banged up he’s had to avoid flying to games. The fact that Bill O’Brien and the Texan medical staff is letting him play is pretty insane, really. What’s crazier is how productive he’s been when he can find the time to complete a pass. Last week the Dolphins couldn’t get home and Watson shredded them for five touchdowns. The pieces around him aren’t as talented, but there’s no doubt the former Clemson Tiger is every bit as dangerous as Patrick Mahomes. Before Will Fuller’s injury he was having a breakout campaign and the Thomas trade was made in part to pair DeAndre Hopkins with another legitimate running mate. Lamar Miller’s 130-yard game versus the Dolphins notwithstanding , there is little doubt it’s the passing game that carries the Texans O. They have a critical weakness, however. There are few bookends less talented than Julie’n Davenport and Kendall Lamm so the Broncos edge rushers should have a field day. It also seems doubtful that D.T. will step in and see significant snaps off the jump so the Broncos are probably catching Houston at the most opportune time for their own chances. They need to capitalize. If the Orange Rush can’t get to Watson he could make mincemeat of the Fly Zone, even minus Will Fuller. What do you think Broncos Country?Broncos 3rd & long: no defense That was a total team failure. The defense was poor (and that will be the focus here), but so were the offense and the special teams. The Denver Broncos looked ill-prepared and, in some instances, uninterested in all three phases of the game. The New York Jets came into the game averaging 88 yards rushing per game. In their previous game (against a good defense) the Jets had gained 34 rushing yards on 14 attempts (2.43 ypc). The Jets had four individual runs against us that gained more than they gained in their entire game against Jacksonville. They gained 324 on 37 carries (8.76 ypc) - I removed the kneel-down. The Broncos defense had allowed 375 total rushing yards in the first four games, then game up 323 in one single game. Since the merger there have only been 38 times where a team has given up 320 or more yards on the ground. Denver has now been on the wrong end of four of them (five if you include the game in 2010 where we gave up 317 yards rushing):324 vs NYJ 2018328 vs OAK 2010 @ home (59-14 loss that got McDaniels fired)317 vs KC in 2010407 vs CIN 2000 (most allowed since the merger)332 vs NE in 1976I really didn’t want to look at the first down run numbers because the runs of 77, 54 and 38 yards ALL came on first down. Let me restate that, on first down, when a team with a lead and a rookie QB might be expected to run, the Jets had runs of 77, 54, 38 yards. I did look anyway, it was like a train wreck, I couldn’t not look. The Jets ran the ball 19 times on first down for 215 yards. That is 11.30 ypc. Isaiah Crowell set an NFL record for ypc for a back with 15 or more carries at 14.70 ypc. The Broncos are now allowing 5.74 ypc on first down runs. That’s 30th in the league. Only DET (6.40) and KC (5.94) are currently worse. Overall we are allowing 5.43 ypc which is also 30th in the league with only KC (5.81) and DET (5.68) worse. The Saints are currently best in the league at stopping the run allowing only 3.29 ypc. Surprisingly, the Broncos were able to force the Jets into eight 3rd and long situations (on 13 3rd downs). The Jets were able to convert on three of those and two of those conversions were TD passes. Supposedly, we have an elite pass rushing unit, a unit that should be virtually impossible to block on 3rd and long. That has not been the case this year. The Broncos defense has forced 35 3rd and long situations this year and has exactly one sack in those situations, and that was in the first game of the season when we got six sacks. Since the first game of the season our hyped pass rush has five sacks in four games. That is one of the reasons we have allowed conversion on 11 of those 35 (31.4%) which is 25th in the league. Denver is also worst in the league having allowed 4 TDs on 3rd and long. We are also worst in the league allowing 9.71 yards per play on 3rd and long situations. Oddly enough, our next opponent the Rams, had been worst in the league so far this year at stopping teams on 3rd and long. They have allowed conversion on 15 of 30 3rd and long situations (50%) , but I’m sure that is not Wade Phillips’ fault (He can do no wrong). Moving BackwardThe 2018 Broncos appear to getting worse week by week. The season, that started so promisingly with a fairly decisive win over the Seahawks, has now derailed so badly that some are talking about tanking the season to finish 2-14 and get another top 5 draft pick. Selfishly I would like to keep the streak going where the Broncos have not had back-to-back losing seasons since the time of the merger, but I don’t know how realistic that hope is. The weaknesses that we knew were going to be there have been exploited:a weak secondary, after CB1, with age/injury concerns an inability to cover RBs and TEsan inability to sustain drives on offense (although we hope Case Keenum and Musgrave might be able to change this)a LT who has poor technique, a hot head and propensity to hold and things that we thought were going to be strengths have turned into weaknessesour pass rush has disappearedour strong running game is being horribly underutilized (Royce Freeman had 5 carries last game)our journeyman QB who was great at protecting the ball last season has thrown more INTs than TDsour run defense, which was elite last season, was just made into the laughingstock of the leagueour strong group of WRs are not able to get YAC because our QB, whose stock and trade has always been accuracy, has not been very accurateThe holes are too many and new ones seem to appear faster than we can fix them. Our coaching staff is getting out-schemed and out-coached on a weekly basis, and now we face the Rams, arguably the best team in the league, on the road with possibility that both of our starting offensive tackles miss the game. On paper this looks like it should be a thorough beatdown by the Rams. Two running backs who have been average at best for the majority of their NFL careers, just gashed our run defense for 318 rushing yards on 35 carries. What do you think Todd Gurley is going to do? Our pass rush, which has evaporated since game one, is now going against the best two offensive tackles in the game. We just allowed a rookie QB who came into the game with one of the worst QB ratings in the league to put up a QB rating of 98.1 against us. What do you think Jared Goff is going to be able to do against the #FrequentFlyerZone (or the #NoTryZone)?I have no expectations that the Broncos are even going to keep this game close. That being said, if the Broncos some how pull off the upset on Sunday (any given Sunday) it would go a long way to salvaging this season (if you still believe that it is salvagable).
