Franko Discussion / conference cautioned against
« on: October 16, 2018, 05:00:37 am »
When a New Jersey racetrack and a casino start taking bets on sporting events Thursday Authentic Justin Houston Jersey , they will be part of an industry primed for tremendous growth, much of it taking place on smartphones, according to a panel of national gambling experts.

Speaking Wednesday at the east Coast Gaming Congress at Harrah’s casino in Atlantic City, a panel of sports betting and technology company representatives predicted the fastest-growing segment of sports betting will be bets made on smartphones as games are being played.

While bettors always will want to bet on the outcome of a game before it begins, many also want to predict particular plays or developments within a game, the panelists said.

So in addition to wagering on whether the New York Yankees would beat the Boston Red Sox, many gamblers also would want to bet on whether Yankee Aaron Judge would hit a home run just as he arrives at the plate, or how many batters Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale would strike out in a particular inning.

Such betting is the main element of growth in the European sports betting market.

”The growth of in-play has been a huge driver,” said Neale Deeley, vice president of Sportradar US, a data company that works with more than 70 sports federations and leagues around the world on fraud detection, including the NBA, NHL and Major League Soccer.

”Mobile and in-play were absolutely made for each other,” added Lee Richardson, CEO of Spectrum Gaming Group, a gambling consulting firm near Atlantic City. ”It’s what customers want to do.”

The forum came a day before New Jerseyans were to begin placing their first legal sports bets. Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy was to place the state’s first legal sports bet at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Monmouth Park, a horse racing track near the Jersey shore in Oceanport.

Thirty minutes later and about 70 miles to the south, Atlantic City’s Borgata casino will start taking sports bets.

No other New Jersey racetrack or casino has announced plans to begin taking bets within the next few days, although most if not all are expected to do so eventually. The Golden Nugget casino and the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, near New York City say they’ll have sports betting operations up and running by the start of football season in September.

New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement issued its regulations for sports betting providers Wednesday, clearing the last major obstacle for it to begin.

The state won a U.S. Supreme Court case last month clearing the way for all 50 states to offer legal sports betting if they choose.

Experts at the conference cautioned against unduly optimistic projections of sports betting revenue and tax money for states; the activity accounts for about 2 percent of Nevada casinos’ total winnings. In New Jersey, Moody’s has estimated sports betting could initially bring in $108 million, or about 4 percent of the state’s annual gambling revenue.

Franko Discussion / awards were announced Saturday
« on: October 16, 2018, 04:38:05 am »
For the third time Youth Mason Rudolph Jersey , Tom Brady is the NFL’s Most Valuable Player.

Now he goes for his sixth Super Bowl title, and perhaps with it a fifth MVP trophy for the NFL championship.

Brady added The Associated Press 2017 NFL MVP award Saturday night at NFL Honors to his wins in 2007 and 2010. The New England Patriots quarterback was joined as an honoree by three Los Angeles Rams: Coach of the Year Sean McVay, Offensive Player of the Year running back Todd Gurley and Defensive Player of the Year tackle Aaron Donald.

Other winners in voting by a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league were Los Angeles Chargers receiver Keenan Allen as Comeback Player; New Orleans running back Alvin Kamara and cornerback Marshon Lattimore as top offensive and defensive rookies, respectively; and former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, now head coach of the New York Giants, as Assistant Coach of the Year.

Brady is the second the player in the four major professional sports to win MVP at age 40; Barry Bonds won baseball’s award in 2004.

Wide receiver Julian Edelman, who missed the entire season with a knee injury, accepted for Brady.

”Thanks, thanks. Wait up. I literally just found out I was doing this like 20 minutes ago. So, I’ve got to read the text,” Edelman said.

”No, but I’m joking. But serious, Tom said he wanted to say he’s very honored and humbled that he gets this award for MVP. Also, he wanted to thank his teammates, his friends, his family and the Patriots organization for going out and doing what they do.”

Brady competed 385 of 581 passes (66.2 percent) for 4,577 yards and 32 touchdowns with eight interceptions as New England went 13-3 for the AFC’s best record. At an age when many QBs are deep into retirement, Brady is throwing deep – and short – as well as ever.

Donald was the first pure defensive tackle to win the award since Warren Sapp in 1999. He said it means ”everything. That’s one of the best to ever do it. So, even for my name to be next to that guy’s name is beyond a blessing. This is what you dream about as a kid, dreaming about playing in the NFL to have success like this, to be able to (play good enough) to win this trophy.”

Gurley’s sensational turnaround season in which he ran for 13 touchdowns and caught six TD passes sparked an equally impressive reversal of fortunes by his team, which won the NFC West at 11-5.

”The Saints got the rookies and we took home the offensive and defensive” player awards,” Gurley noted. ”It just tells you the type of players we have on the team. We all help each other out, absolutely. We have some talent, but we’re nothing without the whole nine yards and everybody together. And we also have a coach who’s up for Coach of the Year.”

A little while later, McVay was handed the coaching award.

In his first season running a team and as the youngest head coach in NFL history, McVay led the Rams to a seven-game improvement. McVay, who turned 32 on Jan. 24, ran away with the voting with 35 votes to 11 for Minnesota’s Mike Zimmer.

”What it means is we had a good season that I think we can build on,” McVay said. ”But you have to earn it every single day. It’s a very humbling league.”

The Rams’ hat trick of awards was not unprecedented. In 2003, Baltimore’s Ray Lewis was top defensive player, Jamal Lewis won best offensive player, and Terrell Suggs was Defensive Rookie of the Year. And in 1999, the St. Louis Rams had three award winners: Kurt Warner (MVP), Marshall Faulk (Offensive Player) and Dick Vermeil (Coach).

New Orleans’ sweep of the rookie awards was the first since 1967, when Detroit running back Mel Farr and cornerback Lem Barney were honored. That was the first season for the top defensive rookie award.

”You get caught up in the season, you don’t really get time to pat yourself on the back,” Kamara said. ”But when the season is over you realize what you’ve done. I’ve kind of had to time to look back and say, I made some history this season.”

Kamara shared duties with veteran Mark Ingram as the Saints won the NFC South. He rushed for 728 yards with a 6.1-yard average, and scored eight times. He also caught 81 passes for 826 yards, with five touchdowns.

The 11th overall draft pick and first from his position selected, Lattimore was a shutdown defender as the Saints went 11-5. He had five interceptions and 18 passes defensed in 13 games, was a sure tackler and, by midseason, was someone opposing quarterbacks tended to avoid. He missed three games, one because of a concussion and two with an ankle injury.

Allen returned from two devastating injuries to win the comeback honor. Allen missed half of the 2015 season with a kidney issue, then was lost in the 2016 season opener with a torn right ACL. There were questions if Allen would ever player at a high level again.

He answered those emphatically this season with the best year of his career. Allen caught 102 passes for 1,393 yards and six touchdowns. He was targeted 159 times, nearly 10 per game.

The awards were announced Saturday night at NFL Honors, when Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt received the league’s Walter Payton Award as man of the year. Watt, in his seventh NFL season and a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, had the goal of raising $200,000 for Hurricane Harvey relief in Houston. His fundraising did a whole lot more, bringing in an incredible $37 million in 19 days.

”I’ve been fortunate to be on this stage and to win Defensive Player of the Year awards, but

Franko Discussion / RBI single snapped the Padres’ shutout
« on: October 16, 2018, 04:28:45 am »
The Padres bullpen has stepped up to fill a hole in San Diego’s rotation.

Eric Hosmer homered http://www.bengalsauthorizedshops.com/authentic-mark-walton-jersey , San Diego’s bullpen took a perfect game into the sixth inning and the Padres beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 on Tuesday night for their 10th win in 14 games.

This was the third bullpen game for San Diego this season, all since left-hander Joey Lucchesi went down with a right hip strain.

”These guys are all built to kind of grind through a lineup one time or cruise through a lineup or attack a lineup one time through,” Padres manager Andy Green said. ”They’re all built for nine batters pretty easily or 10 batters so it just makes sense to give them those types of pieces of a lineup for a first time through and keep hitters uncomfortable. I like it.”

Padres reliever Matt Strahm started the bullpen game and retired nine batters on 36 pitches, including four strikeouts. Adam Cimber (3-2) retired the next six with two strikeouts before Harrison Bader broke up the perfect game with an infield single in the sixth. Bader was promptly erased in a double play.

”In that situation, I know on a bullpen day, me coming in the fourth inning I’m probably looked at to get at least a few (innings),” Cimber said. ”You still take it one hitter at a time.”

Strahm, a lefty, and Cimber, a submarine righty, make a stark contrast for opposing hitters.

”It’s the opposite end of the spectrum,” Strahm said. ”He’s down on the right and I’m up on the left. It’s a good combo to come in.”

The Padres’ nine-man bullpen makes the starter-by-committee approach effective. Green said he plans to go with it again Sunday.

”We’ve got seven arms available,” Green said. ”I’m going to guess that’s more arms available than almost every team in major league baseball, so it’s not putting the stress on our bullpen that a lot of people presume it is.”

Brad Hand pitched the ninth for his 20th save.

Hosmer drove the first pitch of the fourth inning to center field to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. It was his second home run in three games.

A.J. Ellis tacked on two more with a two-out hit in the fourth. The Cardinals challenged the safe call on the second run, but replay showed the Freddy Galvis beat catcher Yadier Molina’s tag at home plate.

”Basically the first strike you see you want to be aggressive,” Ellis said. ”I found a pitch to find a hole on.”

Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas (7-2) struck out five in six innings and walked none. He has walked one or less in all seven of his home starts this season, but St. Louis still lost for the second time in three games.

”I felt like my stuff was pretty good today,” Mikolas said. ”I made some pretty good pitches. I think the ball Hosmer hit was a decent pitch.”

Marcell Ozuna’s RBI single snapped the Padres’ shutout bid in the seventh. Ozuna has driven in five runs in his last four games.

”I thought our offense did a pretty good job of getting some things rolling toward the end of the game,” Bader said. ”Just today, it just showed up a little too late.”

TRAINING ROOM

Padres: OF Franchy Cordero (right forearm strain) took batting practice and hopes to begin a rehab in a couple of days.

Cardinals: RHP Matt Bowman (right hand blisters) gave up a run in two innings Monday at Triple-A Memphis and could be activated by the end of the week.

UP NEXT

Cardinals RHP Luke Weaver (3-5, 4.35 ERA) will get the start in the series finale against the Padres and LHP Eric Lauer (2-4, 6.64 ERA) on Wednesday at 7:15 CDT. Weaver has not allowed a run in 12 innings (two career starts) against San Diego. Lauer gave up six runs in 2 1/3 innings against St. Louis on May 11.

Franko Discussion / the Orioles have lost
« on: October 16, 2018, 04:20:29 am »
BALTIMORE — The Los Angeles Angels broke a six-game losing streak on Friday night. They hit two homers and scored a 7-1 victory over the slumping Baltimore Orioles.

That’s a step in the right direction for a team that’s struggled lately Solomon Thomas Jersey , and the Angels hope to keep moving forward in the second game of this weekend series on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET at Camden Yards.

The Angels have been battered by injuries, and manager Mike Scioscia is hoping they can turn things around.

“It’s been tough,” Scioscia said. “We’ve been banged up, a lot of injuries. When you lose the top guys in your rotation and a lot of starters, it’s tough. We’re just grinding through a rough stretch right now, so we’re just trying to turn it around.”

The Angels (42-41) will send left-hander Tyler Skaggs (6-5, 2.69 ERA) to pitch Saturday versus Baltimore’s Andrew Cashner (2-8, 4.70).

Skaggs has been effective in June, going 3-1 with an 0.67 ERA. He lost his last start Womens Travis Hamonic Jersey , on Monday against the Royals, despite giving up just one run in seven innings.

He has no record or ERA after pitching just once against the Orioles, who now have lost six in a row. Skagg’s only appearance against Baltimore was a start in 2014, when he pitched shutout ball over 4 2/3 innings, allowing no hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Cashner has struggled at times this season but also thrown well despite not getting much help from his team’s bats. He has not recorded a win since May 21.

Cashner has made five career appearances, including two starts, against the Angels and has a 1-0 mark with a 3.94 ERA.

The Orioles’ already injury-riddled bullpen took another hit when the team said Friday that reliever Darren O’Day, on the disabled list with a left hamstring injury, is deciding whether to have surgery on the leg.

The sidewinder has been moved to the 60-day disabled list Panthers Authentic Jerseys , so he won’t be back until at least late August. He injured the hamstring when trying to field a bunt against Seattle earlier this week.

Baltimore made a flurry of moves Friday. The Orioles recalled left-hander Paul Fry and right-hander Ryan Meisinger from Triple-A Norfolk.

Both made their major league debuts in Friday’s loss. Meisinger came in first, and the right-hander allowed one run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings. Fry also went 1 2/3 innings but did not give up a run. The left-hander struck out the first two hitters he faced — including Mike Trout.

The Orioles also optioned starters/long men Jimmy Yacabonis and Yefry Ramirez back to Norfolk after they combined to pitch nine innings versus the Mariners Thursday. In a separate move, the Orioles designated infielder Corban Joseph (brother of catcher Caleb) for assignment.

Baltimore now stands at 23-58 at the halfway point, one of the worst records in major league history. In addition, the Orioles have lost 16 of their past 17 home games.

Still, manager Buck Showalter is holding out hope that the team can do something positive in the final 81 games and wants the Orioles to believe that also.

“(The first half) has been tougher on our fans and our players (than on me),” Showalter said. “As tough and as bad as things have been for 81 games, they can be just as good the other way around.”

Franko Discussion / is be around close family
« on: October 16, 2018, 04:11:55 am »
Randy Moss on one side Leon Draisaitl Jersey , Terrell Owens on the other. Isaac Bruce in the slot.

A defensive coordinator’s dilemma.

On Saturday, the 48 voters for the Pro Football Hall of Fame face a similar complexity. Is Moss, in his first year of eligibility for the Canton, Ohio, shrine, worthy of induction? And what about T.O., in his third year on the ballot? Or Bruce, in his fourth year.

How about all of them?

The two dynamic and sometimes controversial wide receivers and the always-reliable and often spectacular Bruce are among 15 modern-era candidates. From that group, no more than five will be selected.

Also being considered are first-year eligibles linebackers Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher, and guard Steve Hutchinson. Other finalists are running back Edgerrin James; center Kevin Mawae; safeties John Lynch and Brian Dawkins; guard Alan Faneca; tackles Joe Jacoby and Tony Boselli; and cornerbacks Ty Law and Everson Walls.

The senior nominees are linebacker Robert Brazile and guard Jerry Kramer. In the contributor’s committee it is Bobby Beathard.

Much of the attention will be paid to the guys who caught the ball extremely well. Moss and Owens made the Team of the Decade for the 2000s. Bruce’s TD reception won the 2000 Super Bowl for the Rams against the Titans.

Owens has been a lightning rod because despite impressive career numbers, he’s failed twice to get the necessary 80 percent for induction.

”I think it diminishes the reputation and the credibility the Hall of Fame is really revered for,” Owens says of not being elected for what he believes are ”character” reasons.

”I have kind of just moved on from it. Me not getting in first time – and everybody else said at the same time, I should have been in – and even the second time Jerome Baker Color Rush Jersey , I have been in (contention) – I am very fortunate and blessed to have played the game as long as I did considering I thought I would never play beyond the college level.”

Owens played for five teams in 15 pro seasons, having the most success with San Francisco and Dallas, losing a Super Bowl with Philadelphia. Each of his stints in those cities – he also was with Buffalo and Cincinnati – didn’t end well.

”Early in my career when I was an adolescent and teenager, I had self-esteem issues,” he explains. ”I had to get out of that. You have to believe in yourself in order to progress in order to do anything in your life. No matter what, I am not going to look at the Hall of Fame as a platform to kind of validate what I did in my career.”

Nor does Moss, who spent 14 NFL seasons with five clubs, having his best years with Minnesota and New England. He was the 1998 Offensive Rookie of the Year with the Vikings, and in 2007 helped the Patriots go undefeated until they fell to the Giants in the Super Bowl.

Like Owens, Moss also had some run-ins with teammates, opponents, coaches and executives. Whether that affects him as Owens believes it has impacted him for Hall of Fame consideration remains to be seen.

”Going through college and my first couple years in the league, I never looked at the Hall of Fame or at the (gold) jackets Jordan Poyer Jersey ,” Moss says. ”I loved and enjoyed the game. As I retired, now on my fifth year and up as a finalist, now is the time I really looked at, `Am I Hall of Fame worthy? Will I get the nod?’

”Through my playing career, the Hall of Fame was not in my equation. I just enjoyed coming to the stadium and being around my teammates and just competing.”

Moss admits there might be some nerves Saturday.

”It’s kind of like you going into court and being in front of a jury, the fate is in their hands,” he says. ”I don’t have a vote.

”What I will do is be around close family and friends and just wait it out. … I guess your overall final accomplishment for playing in the NFL is the gold jacket. Some nervousness will come in.

”I think I am worthy of getting in on the first ballot, but if not, you win some, you lose some. If the Hall of Fame is my final stop, I am definitely honored to be part of it.”

Franko Discussion / the second Texas starter to
« on: October 16, 2018, 04:03:05 am »
San Diego right-hander Tyson Ross struggled through a forgettable stint as a member of the Texas Rangers last season but is enjoying a rejuvenation this year with the Padres.

Ross said he won’t bring any bad feelings with him to the mound when the two teams square off in the middle contest of the three-game Niklas Hjalmarsson Jersey , interleague set on Tuesday at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.

Texas took the opening game of the series 7-4 on Monday as Shin-Soo Choo had three hits and drove in one of the Rangers’ five runs in the pivotal sixth inning. The victory was Texas’ eighth in its past nine games.

Ross (5-5, 3.34 ERA) will try to help San Diego even the set while the Rangers will counter with right-hander Austin Bibens-Dirkx (1-1, 4.58).

Ross had surgery prior to the 2017 campaign to address thoracic outlet syndrome and made only 12 appearances for Texas before he was released in mid-September after posting a 7.71 ERA.

“I’d probably have struggled no matter where I was last year, just being five, six months out of surgery and picking up a baseball again,” Ross told MLB.com. “It was a lot of ups and downs in that year with Texas. But I think it was growing pains, and I was going to go through it no matter where I was, really.”

Ross will make his 16th start of the season. The Padres have won six of his past eight starts and are 10-5 overall when he takes the mound.

Ross was the losing pitcher on June 21 at San Francisco in his most recent outing despite tossing seven innings in which he allowed just one run. He received zero run support for the second consecutive outing and has worked five or more innings in 14 of his 15 starts, including nine quality outings.

Prior to Monday’s win, Texas manager Jeff Banister was campaigning for a spot for Choo in this year’s All-Star Game. Choo has never played in the midseason classic in his 14-year major league career.

Choo reached base for the 38th straight game, which is a career-high, with the first of his three hits on Monday.

“With how things have gone for us on a day-to-day basis Patriots Elite Jerseys , and what he’s done, I believe that Choo should be recognized as a guy that should have an opportunity to be an All-Star,” Banister opined. “Choo’s an on-base guy first, and when he’s doing that, he’s seeing pitches. He’s focused more on driving the ball that he gets to hit. He’s really good at it, and it keeps him from chasing balls out of the zone.”

Bibens-Dirkx will take the bump for his fourth start of the season and will be working on extended five days’ rest after earning his first win of the year in the Rangers’ 3-2 victory on Wednesday at Kansas City. He was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock prior to that start for his second stint with Texas in 2018.

Bibens-Dirkx is the second Texas starter to win without a strikeout since the start of 2012 (also Colby Lewis, April 29, 2016, vs. Los Angeles), and is the first to do it on the road since Tommy Hunter on Aug. 22, 2010, at Baltimore.

Bibens-Dirkx’ unique outing last Wednesday is also the only quality start without a strikeout in MLB this season. He has never faced the Padres.

Franko Discussion / Phillies gear packed downtown
« on: October 16, 2018, 03:48:01 am »
Kevin Hart fessed up he was tipsy when he tried to crash the Super Bowl stage and celebrate with his hometown Philadelphia Eagles when they hoisted the Lombardi Trophy. The pint-sized funnyman ran into a no-nonsense security guard who refused to allow Hart Joe Thornton Jersey , wearing an Eagles letterman’s jacket, access to the stage that was set up on the field.

Unlike the Eagles, Hart’s Super Bowl celebration would have to be held elsewhere.

”To all the kids out there, I just want to say don’t drink. When alcohol is in your system, you do dumb stuff,” he later said on an Instagram video.

Hart, the Grammy-nominated star, would have fit in fine in Philly.

Unruly Eagles fans climbed light poles, took trust falls off a hotel canopy, flipped cars, busted store windows and even streaked down city streets shortly after their team won the Super Bowl.

It was time to party.

Eagles fans are just getting started.

The city announced that the Super Bowl parade will be Thursday, starting at 11 a.m. at Broad Street near the stadiums. It will move north along the city’s main thoroughfare Brian Gibbons Jersey , past City Hall and finish at the art museum’s ”Rocky Steps.” The National Weather Service says Thursday will be mostly sunny with a high of 34 degrees. Rain and snow are expected in the city Wednesday.

Beer bashes and drunken revelry are in the forecast for the parade.

Eagles fans had suffered through five decades – through Buddy, Reggie and T.O. – without a Super Bowl championship and they want this celebration to go down as one to remember.

That is, if they can remember, in the wake of an alcohol-fueled stupor.

Revelers along the parade route will be able to indulge in free Bud Light at two dozen bars, thanks to a promise the beer maker made to Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson before the season.

Revelers shot off fireworks, drivers beeped their horns and Philadelphians young and old descended Sunday night on Broad Street, the main thoroughfare that last hosted a major championship parade in 2008

Eagles fans are expected to stuff city streets in record numbers. The Flyers have long claimed more than 2 million fans went wild down Broad each year for the 1974 and 1975 Stanley Cup winning teams. Sixers fans mobbed the streets for Dr. J and the 1983 NBA champion 76ers.

And Phillies star outfielder Pat Burrell led a championship procession in 2008, riding a horse-drawn carriage and pumping his fists down Broad. Next came eight flatbed trucks filled with waving players and other members of the Phillies organization, including the Phanatic.

Throngs in Phillies gear packed downtown sidewalks, making them almost impassable. Fans climbed trees, hung out of windows, watched from balconies Youth Joel Iyiegbuniwe Jersey , carried stepladders and stood on roofs to get a better view. The Phillies then greeted tens of thousands of fans who had watched the parade on big screens at the city’s baseball and football stadiums. The team first stopped at Lincoln Financial Field, where the Eagles play.

Now, the Linc isn’t just the site of another team’s rally – it’s the home of the Super Bowl champs.

The Super Bowl, though, was about an overzealous excuse for irresponsible behavior.

The Eagles are perhaps the city’s greatest passion, and the outpouring of support came in more forms than simply pouring one out. Grown men cried and hugged their fathers. Families bundled up and hit the streets to bang pots and pans and share the championship together. Some fans carried signs with names of loved ones no longer here in tribute for those who never got to cherish a Super Bowl title before death.

”I moved here in `94. I didn’t have a team back home (Louisville). The Eagles were my adopted team,” said 41-year-old Eagles fan Rob Ballenger. ”This city has an underdog culture and to rise above it right now is amazing. This city is at a turning point in so many ways.

”I made 100 new friends at the bar (Grace Tavern). Philly fans sometimes get a negative slant in the media, a negative reputation. But these are the best fans in the world, the most passionate.”

They’ll finally get their chance Thursday to celebrate the champion Eagles as one city, united in green.

John Hicks showed off his hitting and his speed Preston Brown Jersey , and made a nice defensive play to help the Detroit Tigers get another big win against the Chicago White Sox.

Hicks homered and scored the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice in the eighth inning as the Tigers beat the White Sox 4-3 on Friday night. Victor Martinez had a two-run double to help Detroit improve to 4-0 at Guaranteed Rate Field this season, and 6-1 overall against the Chicago.

Hicks led off the eighth with a single off White Sox reliever Juan Minaya (0-1) and later tagged from second on James McCann’s flyout to right. With the infield in and one out, Victor Reyes hit a grounder to first baseman Jose Abreu. Abreu juggled the ball on the transfer allowing Hicks to beat the throw to the plate.

”I’m getting a little upset about people thinking I’m slow,” said Hicks. ”We were going on contact and I saw the ball down and took off. He (Abreu) bobbled it a little bit. I may have been in trouble if he didn’t then I was able to get around the tag.”

Buck Farmer (2-3) got one out in the seventh for the win and Alex Wilson pitched out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the eighth. Wilson got Charlie Tilson to hit a grounder to Hicks at first, who made a nice threw to home for the force out before Adam Engel grounded out.

Shane Greene pitched a scoreless ninth for his 18th save in 21 chances as the Tigers won their third straight.

McCann finished with three hits for Detroit.

White Sox starter Reynaldo Lopez came in 1-1 with a 1.85 ERA in his last five home starts, but wasn’t sharp early. In the second inning, Hicks hit Lopez’s 2-0 pitch over the center-field wall for his sixth homer of the season. Martinez added a two-run double in the third to push Detroit’s lead to 3-0.

Lopez settled down after the third and made it through six innings. He gave up three runs and nine hits, but was visibly upset after leaving the game.

”Sometimes the emotions during the game, the adrenaline, make you keep going. I’m a competitor Authentic Jonathan Drouin Jersey , said Lopez through a translator. ”I always want to get more when I have a chance to be out there. That probably why I don’t like to get out of the game. I know the decision. I know they always try to make the best decision for us.”

With one out in the sixth, Tigers starter Mike Fiers gave up back-to-back to singles before Omar Narvaez hit his first home run of the season to tie the score. It was Narvaez’s first homer since last Sept. 2 against Tampa Bay.

On the next pitch, Fiers hit Tim Anderson with an offspeed pitch. Anderson took exception and had a few words for Fiers as he walked to first. The White Sox bench started to empty, but the situation was quickly defused.

”I don’t think he meant anything about it. I think it may have been some joke he was trying to get across, I don’t know. There was no harm, but I think everything got taken out of hand when (catcher) James McCann kind of jumped up and wondered what was going on and the crowd got loud,” said Fiers.

Anderson agreed with Fiers’ assessment.

”He tried to throw a curveball. It was a mistake. You know, pitchers make mistakes. Everything’s cool,” said Anderson. ”I was telling him, `It’s OK.’ I don’t know what he said to me.”

Fiers allowed three runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

KOPECH’S FUTURE

Prized prospect RHP Michael Kopech was rocked for five runs on eight walks and two hits in three innings at Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday night. White Sox manager Rick Renteria just wants Kopech (2-5, 5.20 ERA) to get back to basics.

”Just continue to get back to the drawing board Randall Cobb Jersey , get his work through, his side work. Hopefully, trying to get in a position where he’s commanding his fastball and using his secondary pitch. It is a process. You know, he has had a few tough ones. Hopefully, the next one will be better,” said Renteria.

Renteria said there has been no discussion about Kopech’s prospects of joining the White Sox.

”I can’t speak to his timeline. I haven’t spoken about timelines with any of our guys (in the front office).”

Keon Broxton has made challenging plays look routine for the Milwaukee Brewers.

The center fielder’s latest gem may have been his best one yet.

Broxton helped preserve a lead in the ninth Da'Norris Searcy Jersey , rookie Nate Orf hit a solo homer in Milwaukee’s two-run seventh and the Brewers beat the sliding Minnesota Twins 3-2 on Wednesday.

Broxton was on deck when Orf went deep two batters after Brad Miller hit a solo shot off Jose Berrios (8-7) to lead off the bottom of the seventh. It was Orf’s first career hit after coming up empty in his first seven at-bats.

Just a couple weeks ago, Broxton and Orf were also teammates at Triple-A Colorado Springs.

”Yeah I think I’m more excited about Orf’s home run,” Broxton said with a smile.

The Miller Park crowd was just as deliriously happy with Broxton’s catch. He ran full speed back to the wall and jumped with an outstretched glove to rob Brian Dozier of a homer for the second out in the ninth.

Broxton, filling in for the injured Lorenzo Cain, also made a tough catch at the angled part of the wall in center in a 6-5 win over Minnesota on Friday. He made a diving grab in the ninth last week to preserve a win at Cincinnati.

But manager Craig Counsell said Broxton’s latest catch was ”special … that one, he was on the run and had to time everything absolutely perfectly.”

The play prevented a rocky ninth for Corey Knebel from getting any worse. Eduardo Escobar hit his 13th homer and Jorge Polanco singled with two out, but Max Kepler flied to left to end the game. Knebel picked up his 10th save.

The Twins closed out a 1-8 road trip with their sixth consecutive loss.

”Frustrating. Dozier hits that ball and they made a heck of a play on that ball and then (Escobar) goes deep,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said.

BIG HIT

Jesus Aguilar and Manny Pina lifted Orf up by his legs at the dugout steps to help the rookie answer a plea for a curtain call from a vocal crowd following his homer in the seventh.

”They picked me up and that’s when I noticed they wanted a curtain call,” Orf said. ”Next thing I know, I’m in front of all the fans on their shoulders. It was awesome.”

ON THE MOUND

Jeremy Jeffress (6-1) picked up the win despite allowing Dozier to score from third on Jorge Polanco’s bloop single to left for a 1-all tie in the top of the seventh. The hit snapped a stretch of 20 1/3 scoreless innings for Minnesota against the Brewers.

Berrios allowed five hits, struck out three and walked two in seven innings. He got little support from Minnesota’s punchless offense Authentic Christian Kirk Jersey , which managed just three hits in the first 6 1/3 innings against Chase Anderson.

”I feel mad. As a pitcher, I never want to lose,” Berrios said. ”We had a chance to win the game and then they hit me for two homers. So I don’t like that.”

MAUER MILESTONE

Twins first baseman Joe Mauer got his 414th career double in the fourth inning, matching Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett for the franchise record.

QUOTABLE

”Yeah, that whole play, I think it was the best play I’ve ever made.” – Broxton on his ninth-inning catch.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Twins: Two-time All-Star RHP Ervin Santana (right middle finger surgery) is scheduled to make his next rehab appearance on Thursday at Class A Fort Myers. … Molitor said utility player Taylor Motter (concussion symptoms) is on a ”pretty good track” to return from the 7-day disabled list on Friday.

Brewers: OF Christian Yelich went 1 for 4 after being held out of the starting lineup for five games with lower back tightness. … Counsell said it’s a ”pretty good sign” that Cain (left groin) is running the bases. ”We are close, we’re just not there yet,” the skipper said.

UP NEXT

Twins: RHP Aaron Slegers will be recalled from Triple-A Rochester to start the opener of a four-game series on Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles. Slegers, who has made one appearance this season in the big leagues, is 5-6 with a 3.55 ERA in 14 starts in the minors. Left-handed reliever Gabriel Moya was optioned to Triple-A to open a roster spot.

Brewers: RHP Jhoulys Chacin (6-3) opens a four-game series against the visiting Atlanta Braves. Chacin is 1-4 with a 3.94 ERA in six career starts against Atlanta.

LANDOVER Mark Giordano Jersey , Md. (AP) — Adrian Peterson showed the Washington Redskins what they needed to see in his debut by rushing for 56 yards on 11 carries in a 29-17 loss to the Denver Broncos on Friday night in each team’s third preseason game.

Peterson carried the ball seven consecutive plays on one possession, and the 2012 MVP later picked up 15 yards on fourth-and-1. The Redskins (1-2) signed Peterson on Monday after injuries to three running backs and were eager to see what the 33-year-old had in the tank.

They got their answer: enough to likely earn the starting job Week 1 at the Arizona Cardinals. After only three practices, Peterson looked to have passed Rob Kelley, Kapri Bibbs and injured backs Samaje Perine and Byron Marshall on the depth chart.

Peterson’s play was a bright spot for the Redskins as they were carved up by Case Keenum and Denver’s first-team offense, and Alex Smith was an unimpressive 3 of 8 for 33 yards in four series. Keenum was 12 of 18 for 148 yards before giving way to backup Chad Kelly for the Broncos (1-2).

The Broncos’ first-team offense scored two touchdowns and added a field goal in five series of work, led by dual-threat receiver Emmanuel Sanders. He was responsible for all 75 of Denver’s yards on its second touchdown drive, catching passes of 15 and 33 yards from Keenum and scoring on a 27-yard end-around.

GIANTS 22, JETS 16

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Sam Darnold led the Jets on two touchdown drives, moving closer to securing the starting quarterback job in a loss to the Giants.

The No. 3 overall draft pick made his second consecutive start, finishing 8 of 16 for 86 yards — including a 12-yard touchdown pass to Terrelle Pryor.

Darnold is competing with Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown for the Jets’ starting job, but the rookie is being given every chance to be under center when New York (1-2) opens the regular season at Detroit on Sept. 10.

Bridgewater came in on the Jets’ second offensive possession of the second half, while McCown never played. Bridgewater was 11 of 15 for 104 yards.

Darnold got off to a solid start, leading an 11-play, 75-yard drive on the Jets’ opening series that was capped by Bilal Powell’s 10-yard touchdown run.

The Giants’ starters played just the first two quarters Jordan Mills Jersey , with Eli Manning going 17 of 23 for 188 yards in what was likely his final tuneup before the regular season. Sterling Shepard had seven catches for 78 yards for the Giants (2-1).

PANTHERS 25, PATRIOTS 14

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Cam Newton gave the Panthers an early injury scare before returning to help Carolina defeat New England in a preseason game.

On the game’s opening drive, Newton scrambled out of the pocket on third-and-9 before recklessly diving head-first — this is the preseason, after all — and landing on his head after getting upended by cornerback Jonathan Jones.

Newton was forced to leave the game to be evaluated for a concussion, but returned four plays later to a loud ovation and played the remainder of the first half.

He finished 11 of 17 for 142 yards passing and led three scoring drives — all resulting in field goals — as the Panthers built a 9-3 lead at halftime.

Running back Christian McCaffrey continued to be a major player on offense, touching the ball 10 times for 51 yards on Carolina’s opening drive which lasted nearly 10 minutes.

The Panthers (3-0) had 203 yards in the first half, but couldn’t find the end zone.

It was a quiet night for Tom Brady, who completed 12 of 18 passes for 102 yards in the first half. The five-time Super Bowl champion didn’t get much help from his receivers, who dropped multiple passes. The Patriots (2-1) never did get in sync offensively and were limited to 130 yards in the first half.

VIKINGS 21, SEAHAWKS 20

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kirk Cousins helped Minnesota’s offense make some progress by passing for 182 yards in the first half, and third-stringer Kyle Sloter threw for two fourth-quarter touchdowns as the Vikings rallied for a victory over Seattle.

Sebastian Janikowski kicked field goals from 35 and 55 yards in the first half for the Seahawks (1-2), who kept their starters in past halftime. Russell Wilson led one scoring drive against the vaunted Vikings defense, finishing 11 for 21 for 118 yards.

Chris Carson carried seven times for 26 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 20 yards for the Seahawks, who are trying to regenerate the power running attack that helped them reach two straight Super Bowls.

For the Vikings (2-1) Xavier Woods Jersey , Sloter’s touchdowns went to Jake Weineke and Chad Beebe, before the go-ahead 2-point conversion completion to Weineke again.

LIONS 33, BUCCANEERS 30

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Brandon Powell scored on an 80-yard punt return and Jake Rudock threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Lucas with 30 seconds remaining to give Detroit a preseason victory over Tampa Bay.

The Lions (1-2) rallied from a 21-point third-quarter deficit, long after most of the starters from both teams had left the game. Theo Riddick scored on a 10-yard run and Matt Cassel threw a 3-yard TD pass to Bradley Marquez to begin the comeback.

Adam Humphries returned a missed field goal 109 yards for a touchdown for Tampa Bay, which led 20-6 at halftime.

Meanwhile, Ryan Fitzpatrick was sharp in what may have been his final tuneup for the regular season, which the Bucs (2-1) will begin in two weeks without suspended quarterback Jameis Winston, who’s banned three games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Fitzpatrick, entering his 14th season, went 6 for 7 for 82 yards before he was replaced by Winston early in the second quarter.

Winston also worked one quarter, throwing a 10-yard TD p

Franko Discussion / season on injured reserve
« on: October 07, 2018, 11:54:12 pm »
ALAMEDA Youth Tyler Pitlick Jersey , Calif. (AP) — Oakland Raiders cornerback Daryl Worley has been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL’s policy on substance abuse and personal conduct.

The league announced the ban on Saturday before the Raiders had to cut their roster to 53 players. Worley will be eligible to return to the team Oct. 1.

Worley pleaded guilty in June to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence, carrying firearms in public in Philadelphia and resisting arrest. The charges stem from an arrest in April that led to Worley’s release by the Eagles.

Worley was a third-round pick by the Panthers in 2016 and had 150 tackles Authentic Pekka Rinne Jersey Kids , two sacks, three interceptions and 19 passes defensed in 31 games.

The Buffalo Bills have addressed depth needs by signing cornerback Phillip Gaines and receiver Kaelin Clay.

Gaines spent the past four seasons with Kansas City Womens Jameis Winston Jersey , where he had one interception and two forced fumbles in 41 games, including 16 starts. He was the Chiefs' third-round pick in the 2014 draft out of Rice.

He finished last season on injured reserve with a dislocated elbow. Gaines will compete for a backup spot behind starters Tre'Davious White and veteran free-agent addition Vontae Davis.

Clay rejoins the Bills after Buffalo acquired him in a trade that sent cornerback Kevon Seymour to Carolina in September. Clay had one catch for 28 yards in four games before being waived by the Bills. He finished the season in Carolina after the Panthers claimed him.

Franko Discussion / to find a way to put Cook
« on: October 07, 2018, 11:47:05 pm »
The Alliance of American Football has announced the eight cities in which the league will commence play in fewer than eight months. St. Louis apparently had a chance to be one of those cities.

According to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Brian Gibbons Jersey , the Dome at America’s Center (f/k/a the Edward Jones Dome) would have been the site of the AAF games played in St. Louis, but the venue has a scheduling conflict on weekends in February 2019. The discussions happened as recently as last weekend, with efforts to find an alternative location for early-season games in St. Louis unsuccessful.

So how close was it to happening? Close enough that, according to Thomas, former Rams receiver Isaac Bruce might have become the head coach of the team. The AAF and Bruce had conversations about the Bruce serving in that capacity.

Bruce would have been an intriguing and unconventional choice, given that the other AAF coaches have coached at the NFL or major-college level. Bruce has no significant coaching experience (he has coached receivers at his former high school in Florida).

The XFL and another possible football league also have contact St. Louis about putting a team there. The AAF could still add an expansion franchise to St. Louis in the future, if the operation thrives.

For Indiana guard Victor Oladipo David Krejci Jersey , there was much to like about the Pacers‘ road trip.

“It was a great road trip,” Oladipo said. “Unfortunately, we wanted to end it a little better. If we look at the bigger picture, it was a great road trip for us and we just have to continue to keep getting better like I said. Confidence is high.”

The Pacers won the first three games of the trek before losing to Denver 107-104 on Tuesday night. The trip started with a victory at Golden State.

The Pacers will see a different Golden State team Thursday night in Indianapolis after beating the short-handed Warriors 92-81 on Friday.

The Warriors were without all four All-Stars — Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green — because of injuries and illness. All but Curry have returned to action. Curry will miss the rest of the regular season with a left MCL sprain.

With four regular season games remaining, the Pacers (46-32) are in the No. 5 spot in the Eastern Conference and appear destined for a first-round matchup with Cleveland or Philadelphia.

“I think it is going to make us road-tough and battle-tested http://www.chicagobearsteamonline.com/anthony-miller-jersey ,” Pacers forward Thaddeus Young said of the road trip. “It’s definitely prepping us for the task at hand, which is going to the playoffs and trying to get some games. I think we have been doing a good job of handling it. Just going out there and just playing as a team.”

Pacers coach Nate McMillan was pleased overall.

“We did some good things on this trip,” McMillan said. “We gave ourselves a chance to win (against Denver) and I thought (we had) a couple of mental mistakes down the stretch, (Denver) made some baskets that cost us this game. I think we looked a little fatigued there. I thought there was some mental fatigue.”

Oladipo, who was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Monday, scoring 25 points against Denver. He finished the road trip averaging 25.8 points, 6.8 assists Nick Jensen Jersey , 5.3 rebounds and 3.8 steals while shooting 62.9 percent from the field.

Durant scored 34 as the Warriors beat host Oklahoma City 111-107 on Tuesday night. The Warriors (57-21) are locked into the second seed in the Western Conference.

“We want to build on this and keep building momentum towards the playoffs,” Durant told TNT.

Durant said it was a different game, missing several players.

“We’re missing the missile (Curry) out there,” Durant said. “We figured it out. We were moving the ball, we were being aggressive. Being down not just Steph but Andre (Iguodala), (Kevon) Looney and Shaun (Livingston). Everybody stepped up.”

Warriors coach Steve Kerr called it “a hell of a win, especially without our guards. I loved how these guys played and competed.”

Reserve center Damian Jones contributed eight points for the Warriors in his first significant minutes (14).

“Damian deserves credit Tyler Bozak Jersey , he’s really, really worked hard,” Kerr said. “You can see the type of physical presence he has out there. It was fun opportunity to see what he could do.”

Point guard Quinn Cook has scored in double figures in 11 consecutive games for the Warriors, who are expected to find a way to put Cook on the playoff roster.

In 12 games against the Pacers, Thompson has averaged 26.3 points on 48.2 percent from 3-point range. That’s four points better than his average against any other team.

Franko Discussion / Tampa Bay on Thursday
« on: October 07, 2018, 11:39:30 pm »
RALEIGH T.J. Oshie Jersey , N.C. — The Tampa Bay Lightning have entered a playoff mode before the postseason and there’s still something to play for.

That will be the case in the regular-season finale Saturday night against the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena.

This chase for the top seed in the Eastern Conference has put the Lightning in a playoff state of mind.

“I think it’s good for us to kind of stay in that mentality,” Tampa Bay left winger Alex Killorn said.

The Hurricanes have been on the outside of the playoff picture, but they would like to take a victory into the offseason.

“We got to do it right,” Carolina forward Sebastian Aho said. “It’s just the last game. We want to play it like we want (to). Just do right, the way we want to do it.?”

The Lightning (54-23-4) are still striving for the top spot in the conference, something that can be achieved by winning the Atlantic Division. Tampa Bay leads the Boston Bruins by two points. The Bruins have two games remaining, going to Ottawa on Saturday night and finishing Sunday night at home against the Florida Panthers.

Tampa Bay has won three consecutive games after the 7-5 home victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night.

After defeating Boston 4-0 on Tuesday, Tampa Bay had the benefit of its final two games against non-playoff teams — Buffalo and Carolina.

Tampa Bay center Tyler Johnson said winning the division is the short-term objective.

“That’s our main goal and really the only thing we’re focusing on is how can we do that, and the first step is just playing the right way and doing what we need to do Cory Schneider Jersey ,” Johnson said.

The Hurricanes (35-35-11) carry a three-game losing streak into the game, with each of those outcomes a one-goal defeat.

“We’ll play better on Saturday,” Hurricanes center Elias Lindholm said.

It could be an interesting offseason for the Hurricanes, who underwent a midseason ownership change that already has resulted in the reassignment of now-former general manager Ron Francis.

Carolina is locked out of the playoffs for the ninth straight season, marking the longest active playoff drought for any NHL team.

Aho said the Hurricanes have been a step behind in recent games against teams vying for playoff spots or postseason positioning.

“I think we weren’t quite there,” Aho said. “I mean, we didn’t have the same level.”

The Hurricanes did have a few uplifting moments this week, including the first goal of the season in 32 games for defenseman Klas Dahlbeck.

“It’s a reward for staying with it, being a good pro Authentic Philip Rivers Jersey ,” Carolina coach Bill Peters said. “Good to see him take advantage of the opportunity.”

Aho scored for the third time six games in Thursday night’s loss at Philadelphia. That puts him with a team-leading 29 goals this season.

The Hurricanes are expected to go with veteran goalie Cam Ward in what could be his final game with the franchise. He has a 22-14-4 record this season.

Tampa Bay won by 5-1 and 5-4 scores against Carolina in previous matchups this season.

Brandon Tanev will have to watch video of himself celebrating his first NHL career hat trick because he can’t remember what he did.

The second-year fourth-line forward scored his third goal of the game early in the third period, and Patrik Laine got the deciding score of the shootout to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a 5-4 victory over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night.

”I kind of blacked out and didn’t really know what I was doing,” Tanev said of the moment when hats started raining down on the ice from the crowd at Bell MTS Place. ”It was just a great feeling.”

Laine deked and his shot in the fourth round of the tiebreaker trickled under Bruins goalie Anton Khudobin. Mark Scheifele also scored in the shootout for Winnipeg and Bruins rookie Ryan Donato beat Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck.

The victory capped a perfect six-game homestand for the Jets.

”You’re so happy for him” Winnipeg captain Blake Wheeler said of Tanev. ”That line doesn’t really have a glamourous job. They’re supposed to go out there and basically just shut down the other team’s best players, play heavy on them. They’ve done just an outstanding job of it all year, especially when they’ve been healthy.

”I’m sure he’s going to remember this for a long time. That was as excited as I’ve seen our bench all year.”

Defenseman Joe Morrow had his first goal for Winnipeg since being acquired from Montreal last month, and sixth of the season. Adam Lowry had two assists.

Donato, Danton Heinen, David Pastrnak and Torey Krug had goals for the Bruins, who scored three power-play goals. Krug added one assist and Brad Marchand had two.

”It’s tough to play in this building http://www.chicagobearsteamonline.com/dion-sims-jersey ,” Pastrnak said. ”It’s a hell of a point for us. We had chances to get two, but at the same time we could have zero.”

Hellebuyck made 28 saves to pick up his 40th win for the Jets. It was also their seventh straight victory at home.

Khudobin also stopped 28 shots as Boston ended a four-game road trip 2-0-2 and pulled one point behind Tampa Bay for first place in the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period and Winnipeg scored twice to take a 3-1 lead into the third. The second period ended with Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey being handed a major for boarding the Bruins’ Matt Grzelcyk.

Boston scored two power-play goals by the 3:36 mark of the third.

”You see a guy that’s played an important role for our team since guys have gone down take a heavy hit there, you want to step up for him,” Krug said of Grzelcyk. ”We don’t back down from anyone so it kind of lit a fire into our team and our group.”

Tanev, a Toronto native, then scored his third of the game with an unassisted short-handed goal at 4:29 to take a 4-3 lead. Krug tied the game 4-4 at 8:06 with another power-play goal through traffic after Scheifele was sent to the penalty box for cross-checking Krug.

Winnipeg outshot Boston 4-3 in overtime, with Hellebuyck getting a piece of Marchand’s breakaway shot in the waning seconds.

”It was kind of a weird game,” Wheeler said. ”And then we had to kill (penalties) seemingly all night. The guys out on the kill lost their juice a little bit. You’ve just got to battle. Hopefully that doesn’t happen again, but you never know.

”We might have to go through that sometime this spring Womens James Conner Jersey , and you’ve got to find a way to go through it.”

Tanev began the game’s scoring when he banged at the puck from the side of the net until it went across the goal line at 5:33 of the first period. A Boston challenge was unsuccessful.

Scheifele’s turnover in the defensive zone led to Donato putting a backhand shot past Hellebuyck with 53 seconds left in the first. The unassisted goal was Donato’s third score and fifth point in his fifth NHL game.

Winnipeg scored two straight in the second, with Tanev firing a low shot by Khudobin just 16 seconds into the period. Scheifele then set up Morrow’s 3-1 goal at 6:25 for the 3-1 lead.

The Jets challenged Heinen’s goal at 1:45 of the third for offside, but it stood. Winnipeg was then dinged for delay of game for the challenge and Pastrnak scored at 3:36.

NOTES: Winnipeg’s Blake Wheeler had an assist, giving him 600 career points. It extended the captain’s point streak to seven games, with two goals and eight assists.
